Dinghy/hoist Question?

Hoping we can get some advice on increasing winch load for dinghy lift?

We have a 11' boston whaler with 20 hp johnson outboard on the bow of our 53' convertible. We just purchased it last year and had issues with the winch. We have a crane lift (not sure of the make) with a Dayton electric winch (1/2 HP with 1000# working load) and the load was too much. Cable wasn't in the best condition either which we know didn't help.
We just purchased new cable and a swivel hook pulley block in hopes to increase the load capacity.
Does anyone have any recommendations for the best place to anchor the wire cable when we add the pulley block? We are concerned about height issues.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Are you saying that THAT davit is rated for 1000 lbs or that the winch/motor/cable is rated for 1000 lbs. That particular davit does not - to my eye, at least - look remotely capable of lifting 1000 lbs. I'd think a couple hundred at best.

I would really recommend talking to the manufacturer or some company that deals specifically in such things before attempting to lift the dink.

The Whaler 11 sport is 250 lbs.
The motor maybe another 75.
Fuel batteries and gear 125 or so.

Your probably looking at lifting 500 lbs.

Will the winch not do that?

I agree with Mike, if you don't have the OEM specs for the davit, I would definitely find the manufacturer or some qualified person to give you a load rating for the davit itself, irrespective of winch capacity.

That said the Dayton winches are made by a company called Dutton--Lainson who have been in business since 1886. Really solid midwest company with great management and terrific staff.

I called them to buy a replacement winch for my davit and sent them a picture to identify the model. They asked me to send it back and then just rebuilt and returned it to me for a fraction of the $500 it would have cost for a new one.

I was so pleased I bought a bunch of their oilers and water cans as corporate christmas gifts that year :)

I just ordered a new switch remote for it and they were the same efficient, knowledgeable and pleasant folk to deal with two years later.

We have no information on the type of davit we have. There are no serial #'s or manufacturers name on it anywhere. We used it before with the whaler but the winch was constantly needing reset. We figured new cable and doubling the capacity with a pulley block would help.

If you know anyone who may be able to identify this davit system, please send me a contact or forward the picture. I can take more.
Thanks for the feedback.

Our 11' Whaler sport with 25 hp Mercury weighs close to 750 pounds! Our crane is sized accordingly and even it scares me when I lift the dingy up on the boat deck. I replaced the wire rope on our winch with Spectra and double the line back to the tip of the crane to put half load on the winch. Our winch is rated at 1500 pounds. I'm thinking of either getting a lighter dingy or a hydraulic motor for the winch.
