  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE YACHT FISH (1960 - 1963)
Sold my 1960 41' trunkcabin 4 years ago due to ethanol... hull #3. She's now in Maine getting diesels and a full facelift. Glad for her, but I miss having a trunkcabin!

Anyway... I'm looking at a 1961 with 6v-71's. Hatteras raised the saloon floor in '64 to accept diesels.

I'm familiar with inline 6-71's (that won WWII), but believe they won't fit in the early Hatts. Are the 6v-71's just 6v-53s with 71 injectors??? What kind'a cruise can I expect? Not looking for high 20s, but don't want 12knots either... high teens is fine.

Before you say 'Ask the owner' - he's worm food & the family is clueless...

Glad to be back on the Hatteras Forum & thanks for any info!

They are not a modified 53 series. The 6V71 is a V6 version of the 671. They can be turbo charged up to about 450 HP. A good detroit mechanic will be able to tell you about them when he does the inspection or engine survey.

Hey Scott -

Thanks for the clarification/info. Will certainly have a full-blown survey of the hull and engines (by a certified DD mechanic!). Just was wondering if these engines were suitable for this size Hatt, before I haggle with the estate & surveyors...

Thank you for all the private messages that 6v-71s won't fit in early ('60-'63) trunkcabins. However... the 1961 I'm going to look at on Tuesday, July 17th has them installed. They are naturals.

My hope is the owner didn't raise the saloon floor to fit them, changing the headroom from 6' 3" to something under 5' 10"!!!

With 'well, drop down allison tranny's may get them to fit, but with extensive stringer modification' advice is not reassuring, I'll post whatever I find. That includes if I get a full-blown survey (& engine survey from a DD certified mechanic), or am horrified by what I see Tuesday.

Thanks again for all of your time and consideration!!

Most of the vintage 41 that i have seen had 53's in them.

there is a version of the 671 called a "Slant 671" that lays on an angle for low clearnace. Im not sure if that was an OEM option for the vintage 41's.

I remember seeing a 1970's 40 foot-ish pacemaker sportfish at a boat yard in the 90's that had two big bubbles under the hull. It looked like someone attached a hidden compartment to the bottom of the boat.

The boat was a gas boat but the owner said that Pacemeker made the bubbles to accomidate 671's.

I have not seen anything like that since.

i had a 1972 pacemaker 38sf that had those bubbles on the bottom, it was a gas boat with 330 hp chryslers.
