  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
54' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1989 - 1992)
Over the last couple of weeks, we are begining to list to the starboard. No change in tanks or weight added. I am not seeing any excess bilge water. List is about 4 1/2 inches- not readily noticable but you can sure feel it!

I am concerned we might have some below the water line damage from the collision we suffered (we were hit by a sailboat while anchored) but our diver has not seen anything untoward. Any suggestions on what and where to look for a solution?

Bruce Morrison commited to doing our repairs but given his schedule, we still don't have a time frame. Hauling out will be part of the repairs as one side of the hull needs painting.

4.5 inches is a lot, what model boat?

A building list is not something to ignore. I'd haul as soon as possible and see if there is any water coming out. Check for cracks and possible water entry points.

If Bruce can't get to it right away you may need to have someone haul it now and figure out what's wrong.

I agree with above. That's a significant list. Are you sure your water tanks are equal? If nothing else has changed since the collision, I'd haul the boat ASAP. You may have damage and the hull is soaking up the water. Check all your bilges as there are some areas that are sealed off from others and may be holding water. Have you been running the boat and are you fuel tanks centerline?

Even if it was leaking it shouldn't list that badly unless there's some plugged limber holes.

Or sections without them.

I @$$umed Hatteras knew better than to do that.

I have a few areas that drain aft and if you don't get the bow up water stays there. It's forward and outboard and otherwise unreachable.

I have a few spots that hold some water unless you move the boat around, but not in any significant quantities. It's just nuisance water. Anything that would be enough to cause a list would reach the limber holes and drain long before that.

Unless some fill it with clothes or towels and rags.

Didn't do that but just saying.

Also my boat goes nose down with low water. Maybe better explained as stern up but you get the idea.

4.5 " list is a lot if accurate. Your profile says 54ED that would be a lot of water....

I d check every compartment asap especially outside the stringers at the bow and genny room. Not much room for water to accumulate aft.

Or do you mean 4 degrees ?

I post a photo but measured it at 4 1/2 inches over 17'6" beam. I was wondering if there might be some imber tubes clogged but as someone said, it would have to be a ot of water to make us list this much.

I'll call Crackerboy tomorrow and make an appointment to get hauled. Need to do a few things before moving her though, like a thorough bottom job.

Thanks for the feedback! Just another in a litany of crap hitting the fan.

Salon AC has been out for a couple weeks and have had a hell of a time getting someone out to inspect. Finally got Air Tight out last weds and he pulled the condenser, took it to Ocean Breeze who are making a new unit that will match up to the old Cruisair with bending tube and brazing new fittings. Hope to have it in by the end of the week- summer in Fl w/o AC is not fun...

Why clean the bottom if you're getting hulled? Is the yard far from you?

On my 56 there was a bilge on the entire outboard side of each engine room that did not drain. It was a design flaw that had me bamboozled. Bruce came on board for the very first time and I showed it to him and he knew exactly what the problem was. "You have to drill a hole through the stringer right there" where it could drain to the aft bilge. Cured the slight list I had, which was due to a combination of leaks: from the slightly crushed exhaust tubes, the leaking deck drains and a slightly leaking strainer.

I'm hoping it is something along this line but I am having troulle getting with Bruce to discuss.

An update and request for suggestions. I have placed about 500 pounds (water in 5 gallon pails) along the deck outside the pilot house and we are virtually level.

I have checked every access panel I can find and see no standing water or even evidence of water. Both of my 100 gallon wing tanks are empty verified by opening the sending unit and visually inspecting.
No new equipment or junk has been paced to starboard.

I was able to communicate with Bruce Morrison and I'm now ruling our we have saturated coring below the waterline from our age old collision.

I'm ready to do some ballasting but am looking for any suggestions on how to troubleshoot the cause. I'm reluctant to just treat the symptoms and not address the underlying issue.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies!

That's a lot of weight... Do you have a tender up top? Coudl rain water have been trapped and maybe pooled up at one end. Collapsed cover trapping water ?

Any changed to the water line, fore and aft?

Yes but it has a cover and is not holding any water. I ave not seen much for/aft difference but she has always seemed to me to squat in the rear a bit. As we weigh around 40 tons, 500# doesn't seem like a whole lot overall- just 2 fat friends

If I do put some ballast in, is it best down as low as I can get it? I found n outfit on line that sells stainless shot in cloth bags for this purpose. Comes in varying weights up to 50#. Reasonable cost for them- actually seems cheaper than lead pigs.

I am about due for bottom paint so a haul out is in our near future. Guess a tapping hammer and my dielectric meter are going to be used then...

Those hulls are solid glass so there is no way you could have all that weight in the hull

Maybe someone stole an engine?
