Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
I have a technical question about Detroit governors. 41 hatt with 8v53's rebuilt by my father. Engines have limiting speed gov. Original engines, but may have had some mods done over the years. Does anyone know if hatteras ever put these on Detroit's from the factory. All the marine engines I have seen have variable speed gov. The ones with the big spring. Would there be any benefit to changing these to variable speed. We have enough parts from 2 other engines to build up 2 new var. Speed gov. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. Boat runs great, but following seas seem to confuse the engines. It is hard to get my mind around the differences in the two types of gov. And why someone might of changed them.

The governor is in the box in front of the blower. Its mechanical and works with a spinning weight on a shaft. Its not an option it was the same on all the 8v53same engines I have seen.

I'm not sure about the 53 series, but I've seen both variable speed and limiting speed governors on other Detroit marine engines.

Anyone have any parts breakdown or part numbers for a Detroit 8v53 natural.

The local detroit guys can usually print you out one

I'm not sure why you'd want to go through the effort to change them to variable speed. The only difference is if you were in a sea way the engines would go in and out of sync a bit as the boat turned with the swell. Additionally, should you ever suffer the misfortune of getting into the mud or getting a line wrapped around a prop, the engine with a variable speed governor would increase power making exacerbating the problem.
