Have you checked out any of the old Datamarine units. I'm not sure of the exact size, but I have seen some used ones on ebay recently. I have the original "offshore" depth and sumlog units and they are still working fine (1985)

A simple trick to installing a different sized or shaped unit is to cover the old hole with a piece of plexiglass (acrylic) of your chosen color. Have the edges finished and the corners rounded for a professional look. Then cut the nex plexiglass to the new shape.

When redoing my f/b, I had three or four holes to cover, so I added a black piece of 1/4" thick plexiglass about four inches high and twenty inches long. When I inserted new black gauges it looked better than new...

I replaced my old data marine with a Standard Horizon unit that was real nice. Works great too. I was told that Data Marine isn't around anymore when I was shopping.

Look at a Furuno RD 30, it interfaces with anything Nema 183, You can get a smarsensor tri-duce, gives you speed, temp and depth. I Bought the dispaly off EBay for $200, still checking the trans price, right around 375.00.
Just a thought.

Do you mean the flybridge depthsounder? I replaced my old original 53MY flybridge depthsounder with a forward scanning sonar depth sounder. The 58YF and 53MY are the same but 1972 and 1978 are different flybridges. The sonar unit gives depth and a forward looking view underwater ahead. It's really a collision avoidance plus depth sounder. It fits in the space to the right of the wheel where the old depth sounder was. Not sure if it'll go in yours without making the cutout a little larger, but it sure fills that space nicely.

For a simple and very reliable depth sounder only, I really prefer Raytheon 's Raymarine ST60. It's about $400, but it has always been 100% there for me. It won't fit that space you want to fill, I just think it's worth a mention because it's excellent.

Doug,
Who makes your forward scanning sonar and are you happy with it? I've been considering Interphase iScan 180, but have heard poor reviews of it.
