Possibly I am over-reacting, but something didn't look right about the thread I just deleted...like no prior posts and the home address was Google. If I've knocked out a legitimate thread, my apologies, but somehow I don't think so.

Nah, Dr. Jim. I think you're doin' okay, it smelled funny to me too. Not that you need my endorsement.

The site has been so quiet lately can we afford to delete threads? Where is averyone anyway?

MC, HH, HNY and all that holiday stuff to all

Boatsb, it's not the quantity of threads that we are concerned with here, but the QUALITY of threads! I'm sure everyone is just out holiday shopping and getting ready for the holidays.

There is a balance. All dry technical stuff makes it a bit boring. Too much kidding around becomes silly and a waste of time. We need the balance and to admit we all still have a sense of humor. ( I hope )

SMPTE ( Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers ) became that dry uninteresting group here. I was the past Chairman for the FL/Caribian chapter. They are now only a memory as the governing body took them over into another region because no one participated anymore.

Maybe the Bird was a bit over the top sometimes but he did gat us on line with a bit of anticipation of some interesting conversation.

Boatsb, I see that you just joined this forum about 8 months ago, the month before that crazy bird did and dramatically changed this site. I fear that because that (the last 8 months) is all you have seen, that is all you know about what really makes this forum tick. This forum had done just fine for YEARS without a sandbar or much other than some truly excellent, albeit quite technical discussions. Sure there was some friendly banter, but nothing like the craziness that this site has seen over the last 7-8 months. Look what has happened to the bird of change, he flew the coop! This site is obviously much more slanted to the technical side, as evidenced by the sheer numbers on the tech forum and the weak numbers on the sandbar, even when the bird was still in full flight. So don't worry too much about this forum going the way of the SMPTE, there is little chance of that!

JIm I am not looking to be the new guy who brings the forum to a paradigm shift but someone who enjoys the company of like minded boaters.

I just want to see it grow. I have been a member and an owner since April and have learned alot. The technical stuff is great but its theory. What happend last weekend with our Mini roundevous was better as we all got together and fixed someones boat plus had a great time doing it.

I do want to make sure people grow in more ways than just theory. If we can become an active social group we can help each other hands on.

My father taught me to learn about other people and their cultures buy meeting and eating. Sample their food and learn of their culture. Well I figure I can have a beer, Crown, Single malt or Grand Marnier with anyone willing to meet somewhere and send an open invitation to all members when in the area to get together and partake of an adult beverage or too.

I may not get to travel too much but to all the owners out there "I'll show you mine if you show me yours". We are all proud of our vessels and like to show them off.

I disagree that all the technical discussion is just theory. Theory is something that has not been proven. Much of the technical discussion on this forum HAS been proven, by many of the more experienced members actually repairing problems on their boats, then telling us what worked. They graciously offer their experiences and knowledge (usually directly from experience) to the rest of us. What we do with it is up to us. This is how we grow as a group.

If you want to see the forum grow, just stick around. It has been steadily growing for several years now and will continue to do so (as long as new members do not try to come here and re-invent the wheel). No, that is not directed at you Boatsb, just a general comment.

We DO help each other "hands on" as much as possible considering that our members are spread out all over this country and others. It's not too easy for an all-inclusive member get-together for a weekend of projects but this forum does allow just that, we are all here sharing experience while working on our boats. Many of us consult this forum before, during and after projects and that is how we grow and learn together. The internet is the only way that this many people with like interests can share so much over such distances so easily. That is about as "hands on" as it gets when there is so much distance between members.

Your Father was right, but meeting and eating is not always possible for most of this forum. I went to FLIBS and met and ate and drank with several members. It was great, but it was such a small example of the membership of this forum. Things change with time, and the internet is a place where people can "meet and eat" in different ways through their keyboards with pics and discussion. Nothing beats a good old fashioned handshake, but realistically this is simply not possible for everyone.

Mini-rendezvous are GREAT and will always be a fun way to meet and eat when possible. Unfortunately, most members will have to benefit from the pics and info available on this site. You mentioned that you may not get to travel much (like many here), but that is precisely one of the beautiful benefits of this forum because we do not need to travel to share ideas, pics, etc and make friends. We can do all that right here thanks to to the great people at SAMS MARINE!!!!

Not that the bird needs me to defend him, BUT I joined the site a couple of morphs ago, 2001 when I got my 41c,. At that time the site was bland, and boring, but it was a good source for some techy questions I had. After awhile I just stopped visting the site. What was missing was good natured bantering, and any oppertunity for social interaction(xcluding 34 hatt stuff that Dan S and crew were doing, my bad for missing the parties) While the bird was a bit over the top, he did manage to round up a crew at the FL show. First time I ever met any of you guys was at that show, and I've been going to is since 2000. The Bertram31.com page, on the other hand has as much tech info as there is here and it's alot more lively. Get togethers all over the place with boats(rendevouz's) and other activities. Trips to the Tropic Star lodge, dove shoots, pheasent hunts, boat shows(one year there were 45 guys at the same hotel for the FL show), Marlin fishing out of port eads. Just seems to be a much friendlier site. Probably just my personality quirk, but I find it odd that I've met doz and doz of bert guys up and down the east coast that I go out of my way to visit, but other than the FTL meetings the only other Hatt guy I've met was Oldhatt45 in Jersey. Not looking to change this site, but seems to me it wouldn't be that hard to soften up the page just a bit, without reiventing the wheel, other wise while you'll see new member growth, you'll also see the departure of old timers who most likely get all the anal retentiveness they need at work(and none of this is directed at you thirdhatt, cause I've met you and you seem to be a hoot) just my observation.

No prob here Hunshatt, I very much enjoyed meeting you and the bird and all the others at FLIBS. I agree that social events are wonderful and well worth organizing. I simply enjoy the pure usefulness of the tech stuff and I personally feel that it is the meat and potatoes of this forum and probably always will be. I, for one, have no problem with that. This being said, I will make every atrempt to rendezvous with as many of this forum's members as possible at all times. Heck, I even tried (and failed) to organize one myself for Thanksgiving near Genesis' cruising grounds!

I never want to take anything away from fun get-togethers and the like, I just have an issue with those who downplay the importance of the tech stuff. I seem to recall that while we were at FLIBS all sitting at a table at the beer barge you and I were discussing tech stuff right after we met and the bird scoffed and moved to a different seat so he could BS! If it weren't for the tech stuff, we would all be scratching our heads and pulling our hair out on so many of the projects that we take on or worse, have to write many more large checks to have these projects completed by someone who is "in the know". The tech side of this forum makes all of us just that, "in the know" and that is the first and foremost thing I love about this site.

Is it possible that some that are (were) here for the social aspects and not the tech stuff are some of the ones that mostly write checks to get the tech stuff done on their boats and are therefore less interested in tech stuff as much as social stuff? No problems here if so, but I wouldn't downplay the importance of the tech stuff because SOMEBODY has to learn it to fix these boats!!!

We must remember that to cruise and to have get togethers by boat, our boats must run and function properly first so that we can get there to meet and eat together!

Okay, time for a group hug (even you bird)! :D

Thirdhatt, couldn't agree with you more. We need the tech stuff. Specially when your of limited ability and funds(which decribes me) I'm going to need all the info I can get for the xpress project I've got going on. The crane is showing up sat to lift the top and pull the motors. The rest is allready gutted. I'll be doing the majority of it myself(cause I can't write a check) but I still like to meet guys like yourself, drink beer and talk boat. Having said that even with the bird gone, the site seems much more enjoyable than it was. I like that we get off topic, ie Jim's Gt car and similar divergent threads.
So who's in the far north east?

I believe we are mostly in agreement. I am not one to downplay the importance of maintaing the boats properly and the learning opertunities the site provides. I also like the idea of being able to fix it and use it. That being said I propose we all look to expand the sandbars use ( even this thread should have landed there) and welcome the social aspect. Some people are more hands on fixing their boats than others but we all know enough to own a Hatteras.

My job has me traveling around central, north and sometimes south Florida during the week. (I may be in your area looking to visit) Most weekends I try to get to the boat even if its just to sit on the couch and relax a bit. Drink a few with friends and neighbors and have a de compression session.

Sometimes I am working on a project and am completely focused on getting it done. I log on and ask questions as needed and get great responses

This probably means I am Bi- Polar but who cares. I enjoy both the social and technical parts of boating. I think we all need some balance. Even the Bird might be trained to moderate it a bit.

I have to agree with Byron 100%. I am glad things are back to normal around this site. There is no problem with the quantity of threads or the quality as of late as far as I am concerned.. I have enjoyed trying to keep up with all of the new topics and I seem to learn something new every day. The Sandbar was a nice addition for rendezvous type events and such and I hope to meet some more of the forum members in the near future. But the real usefulness of this site is the tech portion. Thanks again, Sams!

Wow It is funny too find this here, Boatsb is right should have been in the Sandbar. As being a member for 6+ years I have too say we all take the Tech stuff serious. But you have to have some fun that's what boating is about. Yes the Bird would go over the top sometimes and he knew it and said so. He change the site for sure and most of it I have to say was for the BETTER he rallied the troops to come together more then ever. The site was and still is a great tech site but it had more of a fun warm side lately but that is cooling off these days :( and we all know why. So having things go back to full normal I hope not but that's just my opion and we know what they say about that

WOW you guys I didn't know you where over here in the parts section getting all mushy together I don't want to miss anything :D

As for Thirdhat and the Genises Rondezvouse it was a little far for me but don't worry we'll try to pull it off in the summer  I gotta see Thirdhats disco ball in action...

Also wanted to say I think another meeting or roundezvouse maybe in order you guys pick a place? I'll try hard to make the next one ! I really wanted to go to the light boat parade in the cape but I had one in Marco to do myself?

As for the BIRD I think we all miss him, and he did seem to do the chicken dance to the extrems sometimes. It sure was fun to see him ruffel some fethers :D

Some of you seem to be mourning him, hey he's not dead pick up the phone or e-mail him, or we can all have a Bird ronezvouse on Genises site or some other you guys name the place and lets see if we can make that chicken dance again

Yeah I contacted Mark from the old vintage Hatteras site to see what happened to his forum he had set up. Well the reply was like being a Bird and flying into a plate glass window at Full speed  So some emails for now but not the same.

Dan, didn't mean to leave you out of the hatt guys on the east coast.
Now it seems that Rickysa is on the list as well. heck this site is looking up, socially

Well, here is my two cents. I like the tech section, and helping and being helped by other owners experience. But it does get boring. I like the fact that Freebird came here and shook things up a bit. I would like to see more interaction on the forum between the members. We have a lot of wall flowers that need to jump in the deep end of the pool, instead of sitting on the sidelines. Some of the self annointed on this site gave me a less than warm welcome when I first signed on and made a few posts, but I am no wilting lily so I am still here. I have served my country, been in several wars, been shot at, jumped out of airplanes, traveled to the world's hot spots, so an idiot with a keyboard is no real threat. Every forum has trolls and some of them think that because they were here first they can dictate to newer members. I believe that this forum will remain successful as long as new members participate. I think that 90 percent of the problems we experienced were prompted by a few members that did not want the bird playing in the sandbox. They intentionally antagonized the situation. It was very childish, and I think most people saw through it. I personally enjoy people who are different than I am, if everyone was like me this would be a really boring place. So the more the merrier. I think there is plenty of room here for people with open minds. I would like to see Randy come back and play in the sandbox some more. A couple of technical questions a day is not enough activity for a forum with as many members as we have.

I moved this as it definitely wasn't a part wanted or for sale thread :D

Heh, I've been on a cruise - literally - for the last week. Home now, and my kid just opened her presents. I'm off to lala land but am "back" and around..... as usual :)
