  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
I'm going to be spending a lot more time on the boat (1969 45C), and cruising Galveston bay. The waste system currently on the boat is a lectrasan unit that is still operational. There has never been a holding tank or deck plate installed on the boat, I guess because it was always fished and it was never an issue. Now that she's retired this situation has become a priority. Does anyone know where the original holding tank location and size of tank, as well as the deck plate location was designated when manufactured? I would like to stay as close to the intended orientation of these components as possible. Y-Valve placement would work itself out as long as I knew the intended locations of the tank and deck plate. I realize that the tank size may be compromised due to post manufacture installation, but the location would be key in determining the size I'll be faced with.

Not sure if you have one or not but the 46C and the few 45Cs I've been on have a tank that runs forward of the center fuel tank. There is an access hatch in front of the door to the master stateroom that will give you access to the fittings on the top of the tank. That tank should be about 90gls. That tank was set up to be used as fuel, water or waste and often not plumbed from the factory. That's how my '74 46C was. All other tanks are the same as the 45C so hopefully yours is there too.

A 69 45 would not have a holding tank. I think the FWD tank was added in 73-4 when they put the TI's in for extra fuel. From what I remember the generator was plumbed off the FWD tank on the 46's I've fished on.

The tank I'm referring to is forward of the forward fuel tank. I've seen it on a few 45Cs that
I was on. I know others have mentioned not having it on some of the older boats.

Well Jack, I do have the forward center-line Fuel cell, but there is not sufficient space to put anything forward of it, if so, I cant gain access to it thru the master. Maybe by coming back from the galley center hatch, but that's a smallish hatch at best. Damn, I wish I were at the boat now. The most logical placement would be forward of the galley hatch next to the Lectrasan unit and shower sump, but don't want to cut the floor, but its looking probable.

If the tank is there it is under the companionway sole and fitted to the hull. Check the hatch in the galley sole and see if it is open to the bilge or is there a tank just below the deck. The tank runs from the forward end of the forward fuel tank to just aft of the door to the forward stateroom. If the tank is there you will find a plate with 4 different sized pipe plugs in it. The tank can be configured for fuel, wast or fresh water. If it's there you're in luck. If not you would have to rip up the galley sole to try and fit a tank in. I had a small 20 gal aux tank located under the step in the forward stateroom.

What was the 20 gal tank for?

my 77 46c was the same as jack described, the hatch on mine was just outside of the master door in the galley floor

What was the 20 gal tank for?

PO added it instead of plumbing the holding tank. He never realized the original tank was there and not used.

That's great news about that tank. I must wait till next weekend to see if I can move aft under the galley sole from that companion way hatch. Now I just need to know where that deck plate was at. Come on you guys call your friends, someone else must have had a series 1 45c......"LOL"

Gole IV is a Series I 1973 45c. We do have the three tanks along the keel, the forward tank has never been used. We also have Lectrasan installed on the forward bilge. There are two access hatch for the forward tank connection on the companionway in front of the master cabin door ( see the Photo taken during restoration project)
The only way to add valves or pumps is to run the lines forward to the bilge.

A '69 45C does not have a tank forward of the center fuel tank. It's all open space. There's room under the companionway and the v-birth for a tank (probably where your Lectra-San is now). My Lectra-San (in my '69 45C) is directly under the v-birth door. Access hatch in the galley across from the head door (over the shower sump) and also a 18" square hatch in the v-birth floor.

On my "list" is to install a Raritan Hold 'n Treat in place of the Lectra-San. I'll have to widen the forward hatch a half inch, and it'll fit right in there.

As for your deck pumpout location...the only place I can see feasible is to go up the v-birth closet to the bow deck. I won't be doing that...as I don't see the need for a pumpout hose.

Thanks guys, for your input. Jason, the "Hold n Treat" system seems to be a viable option, if your boating routinely takes you outside the "No Dump Zone", but still within the 3 nautical mile limit. Unfortunately, 90% of my navigable waters will be well inside the "No Dump Zone" imposed for the Galveston Bay Waters where the boat is berthed. Taking a trip outside, just for dumping would just be poor planning on my part, so my only option would be to install a Type III system and join the countless others that self monitor tank levels and frequent pump out facilities. Fortunately, my slip has slip side pump out capabilities that alleviate the need for jockeying a 45' boat around pump out facilities.:o My only worries are how to get a 30 to 40 gallon holding tank through a 28 x 24" galley sole hatch.
