Where is the boat located? How bad are the engines? If they need to come out the cost will be huge.

The boat is in the Southeast, the engines are at 2900, but running well. this is possible purchase and I don't want any surprises. Huge?

What HP are they and have they been majored before? Have them surveyed as overhaul cost for these Detroits typically run around 3K per hole but many Detroit shops are now quoting as high as 4.5K per hole. So that would be anywhere from 72K-108K to major the pairs. That doesn't account for any bad cores, blocks, cranks etc. If one of them has to come out the cost could double. Take a good look at the boat, only way to get them out on a MY is by cutting a hole in the cabin top and lifting them out or by cutting the hull sides and sliding them out. Not a simple task either way. Fortunately they rarely have to come out. If you have the boat under contract, post the location and someone here should have a good engine surveyor for you.

In Destin, FL Jeff Chesser with Harbor Diesel would be my first choice. He overhauled my DD 6V92TA in 2009.

Joe Signorelli

Saunders Yachtworks of Orange Beach AL overhauled my 12V71TI in January 2010. It was over $50k. Now the engine is toast and has to be done again.

Their idea of standing behind their work was "take a hike sucker!"

And ... that was after spending a total of $209,000 with them!!!!

Needless to say, I was waiting to give them a "recommendation".

A**holes.

This time, I'm planning on having Central Marine do the job at Herrington Harbour MD. I will be present for the entire process so at least I will learn something in the process.

There is definitely something to be said for buying a boat where the engines are already done, thoroughly surveyed and clean bill of health.

I would suggest Covington Diesel in Beaufort. Covington is the company that sold Hatteras the engines. They are next door to us. Call 252-504-2299 if there is anything more that needs to be done to the boat it would be in my back yard.
