  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
I switched to Rotella T40 on my last oil change in the Keys and now up in the Baltimore area I cannot find it. The story is the distributer has dropped it and can only get 15W40 which I'm not about to use..

What are you guys finding to be easily available in the MD/DE region? Or maybe some one has a source of Rotella T40 they can recommend that I'm not aware of.

Bob

Chevron's DELO 100, 40WT works for Detroit's too.

Just did a change with Delo 100 (40wt). It seems to be relatively available at local marine stores and some AutoZones, but you may have to special order enough to do a full change out. Mine took 12 gallons.

I know 40wt CF2 Rotella is readily available - in stock - at the marina store where I used to keep our boat in Northport, NY. I also saw pails of it at two marine stores in MD near piney narrows yacht haven, a West Marine and a Boaters World but I have to admit I didn't look at the wt. But if they stock any Rotella, they can get the 40.

I was shocked at the price difference between '06 and '07. In 06 I paid $48 for a 5 gal pail of Rotella; in 07 it was $65!

I just called AutoZone here and they say they can only get quarts!*%#. I've been getting the same response from most of the locals.

Other thoughts? Kent I is a long drive.

I am not in your area so I don't know how available the oil I use will be for you. I have used Kendall Super D3 40W for 25 years with good results. I buy it in 5 gal buckets from the bulk dealer. I also buy 30W for my gen set by the case from him.

One reason I stay with Kendall is that I get free oil analysis when using thier products. I buy a box of 12 oil sample bottles/mailers for about $12. You just send in the samples to Kendall's lab and the reports come back at no charge. If you don't already have one, you will need to buy a hand held sampling pump and disposable plastic tubing from the dealer. The samples are obatined by screwing the sample bottle to the pump and inserting the plastic tubing down the dip stick tube. It couldn't be easier.

I bought 40w from Quarles in Springfield, VA. Look up oil distributors in the phone book.

Check the oil jobbers and distributors. Your choices are: Exxon XD3 40wt, Shell Rotella 40wt, Texaco Ursa 40wt, Chevron Delo 100 40 wt, Kendall Super D3, or Mobil (but I think the Mobil product has been replaced by the Exxon). At any rate, you must have one of those available from a distributor. Mobil/Exxon is the biggest and they have a huge dealer network. They actually make the DD oil as well as Cat and many others.

I am shocked that all you Detroit guys need SAE 40. Every other diesel I have ever known is fine with 15W40. What do you guys do in colder weather? What do they use for drag lines and dozers in winter? 15W40 should be 40 on a hot summer day.

Re: Why 40wgt only, is reportedly due to the very high pressures in the valve train, against which a multi-grade cannot fully protect. Also, a "low ash" formulated oil, in addition to the 40wgt, is also recommended, due to potential fouling of exhaust ports (I believe this is purpose). See Skycheney's list for oils that meet the above spec.

At any rate, "40wgt only" is the drill on DD 2-cycles. 4 cycles is a diff story...

if ya don't use 40w, sometimes they'll smoke like a mosquito fogger

I bought Rotella T 40 from NAPA a few months ago, and it was actually cheaper than Sams Club. You may find a store in your area.

My oil change place guy ordered me several cases of Rotella 40W at his cost, AND takes the old stuff for waste. FWIW, he gives me his waste anti freeze for winterizing as well. 50 gallons for the mains etc (non potable though ). ws

Bill, Where are you located? All the NAPA and other auto parts places I called in Wilmington say their distributor is out of it and have no idea when to expect it. Sure glad I started early on this. We will be headed south in another month.

Hey Bob... I'm just outside Chicago. I know all you good 'ol boys use NAPA, but up here I avoid them like WM. Case in point; when I was in NOLA and preparing for an oil change, I went to NAPA for 30 gallons in buckets, only to get back to the boat, 20 miles (?) with 15W40. I guess JAMAL couldnt read the label. Mea Culpa for not DOUBLE CHECKING before I left !! That was an 80 mile trip before I was done, and ended up getting a much better deal from the Donaldson Filter guy in NOLA, just down the street, who, BTW, had the oil AND all the filters I needed.
My oil guy did have to call his distributor to order it and it took about 4 days to get here. Try dealing with an equipment / truck supply place. Ricky Bobby runs Quaker State anyway (YUCK). LOL
When I did get the stuff, I had ordered 42 gallons for a 24 gallon change, just to make sure I had enough for my trip in case the 12s starting blowing through the stuff. As it turns out, I was using a quart a day until I started keeping it a gallon low on the stick. Now I RARELY have to add. Hmm.
FWIW, my 12s dont smoke and BARELY leak a drop --- I guess I'm lucky, or fortunate.
As far as SAMS here, they only have Rotella 15W40, and looked at me like I was from YERANUS when I asked them about straight 40. I guess BRENT runs some exotic syntho shit in his nitrosed Yamaguchi, but he can recite speaker impedance on his ghetto blaster. EXCELLENT, DUDE !!! Trust the parts guy with WHITE HAIR !!! ws

lol, u said ghetto blaster...those things went out way before my time :)

Ah you kids are all the same LOL ! Ghetto blaster, boom box, Kyle kickers--- When us white hairs spun LPs, we grooved on high fidelity, not a thousand watts of bass ! When I pull up next to WILLY at the light, I mouth to him "CAN YOU NAME THAT TUNE ??"... I usually get a well resounding "HUH?" The end result is he turns that SHIEST down.
I have a 23 year old tenant that builds high end speakers and he showed me some "cones" that run about 250 degrees F when you pour the watts to 'em. They actually have cooling coils built in. FWIW my first car, a 1962 Impala SS has an AM radio with tubes. Even that beat the alternative. I did enjoy the
"ring" of the dual quads on that 409 though. ;-)) Gas was 28.9 then... ws

Check with Lube Finers out at the Travel Plaza at O'Donnel and I-95. They carry it and most all lube needs.
