Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I want to get the service manuals for my 1978 8V71TI's and I'm wondering if there's a less expensive place to order them than through my local DD distributor?

Thanks,

Doug Shuman

Hey Doug
I have been meaning to call you and find out how things went on the trip. Listen I bought a service manual that is on a CD the guy I bought it from has them listed on E-Bay.

Item number 4576383426 on E-Bay

Of course mine was for the 63 series. I am very pleased with the CD and with his service. You might want to take a look.

Be aware that the ones on CD are scanned PDFs and definitely pirated - NOT original DD work.

I got a set and sent them back - he DID refund my money without hassles, but I was quite unhappy that he basically stole them and was selling the fruits of that.....

Karl, I recently purchased a 2 disc set of DD manuals for 92 series (I have 6/92's). I have not tried them yet but considering I only paid $15.00 for the pair, I strongly suspect the're the pirated version. Where do you suggest we get the real McCoy's? Walt

There are no official CD versions from what I know. I bought mine as hardcopy.

I bet you got them (if on eBAY) from the same guy I did. The dead giveaway was that he used azure-dye CDRs to dupe them, and the blue tint to the data layer gives it away.

He DID do a nice screen printing job (probably with an inkjet) on the labels though....

I looked at those on eBay, and I think they're legally copied versions of older US Govt. Detroit Diesel's manuals that have been released into the public domain by the US Govt. So they scan and copy them legally. The only issue should be their updates through what date.

I lie the CD version with a search option, so I'll go with that.

Thanks guys,

Doug Shuman

No, the ones I received were 1988 vintage and were clearly scans from commercial DD books. There were no US Govt. legends anywhere on the pages.

The guy I bought it from took them back IMMEDIATELY when challenged - if they were LEGAL scans he would have certainly put forward that defense, I'd think....

Karl,

Yes. I was just talking about the ones on CD from ebay where they claim that's what it is. Yours were obviously a different story. For $20 I'll give it a try just to see.

Thanks,

Doug

It's kind of hard to hold the CD on your lap and do the work. Bill

Doug,

FWIW Try "Out of Print Marine and Industrial manuals" 860-767-7351 or 860-767-1070, PO box 718 82 N Main Street, Essex, CT 06426 "Gilbert A Plumb"

I purchased a complete set of DD manuals from this guy for about $125. I also have the CD's but the manuals are far easier to use. Mike
