Hatteras Model
32' FLYBRIDGE FISHERMAN (1983 - 1987)
I am looking at a couple of Hatt's 42' LRC with DD 4-53N's with hours from 6000 down to 3000. Does anyone have an idea how long the engines are good for before rebuild and/or replacement and the estimated cost of a rebuild? Looking to move aboard full time and sell my 1983 Hatt 32'FBSF w/Crusaders with 866 hours since new. Thanks for your input.

Tough to give you a reasonable reply. The 3-53, 4-53 and 6V53 naturals are pretty tough. The 8-V53's perhaps less so. Most important is at what RPM the engines were usually run. If run at 2300 RPM they will be near dead already (assuming they turn up 2500 tops); if they were run at 1800 with regular oil changes, they will outlive most on Sam's Marine forum.
Keep in mind that commercial engines often go 20,000 hours or more with minor tune ups, like injector rebuilds. Downtime on recreational boats is tough on engines. 10,000 hours would not be unusual for a recreational engine. Even a superfifical engine survey by a good mechanic can detect major problems: engine sound, coolant condition, start characteristics, and operation under load should give reasonable feedback. An engine oil and transmission oil analysis is another cheap, worthwhile check. These are not finicky hi tech, hi HP engines that require perfection of each part.

If they were treated well and used frequently those sorts of numbers don't scare me.

Have a mech pull airbox covers and have a look and do my cold-start test, along with pulling oil samples and checking the coolant for anything out of the ordinary (like discoloration, out of spec - get some test strips), etc.

If they get a clean bill of health from an engine surveyor they'll probably outlive you. Natural Detroits are tough motors and will run nearly forever with reasonable maintenance.

Agreed as above. And I may add that the 53 series are among the least expensive of the GM's to rebuild as the parts prices are almost reasonable price wise and very available.
