I am tossing around the idea of using a dark blue color on a 46'. I know that it will be alot harder to keep clean. I am wondering how much it will effect the heat? I am in MS and it gets hot! my AC has two speeds: wide open and broke :D . Does anyone have any thoughts?

I wouldn't do it.

You are likely to run into fading problems over time...... especially if the boat is not shed-kept.

Although I do admire the looks of a freshly painted blue hull, unfortunately they don't tend to look like that (freshly painted) for terribly long without a covered slip. You touched on the other big problems with dark hulls, the extra cleaning/upkeep and the tremendous heat in the south. Our A/C's have enough load on them being out in direct sunlight all day with little or no insulation to keep the cool in.

Also, colored hulls are fads. They come and they go with time. A white hull never goes out of style.

Just my $.02.

Somewhere, I read where David Pascoe wrote about the dark hulls and that in hot climates, the hulls get so hot that somehow the properties of the fiberglass were affected. I cannot recall the particulars of what happened to the glass as it was heated up like that, but I do recall that he strongly recommended against this. I, personally, don't know one way or another....just telling you what I read.

Thanks Y'all! Ok, I was having a moment of weakness...... how about fighting lady yellow?? or ice blue??

This is why you never see a black or dark blue airliner- the AC packs cannot deal with the extra requirements. I think Hefner (playboy) had a black 727 at one time. You can get away with it on a VIP because they carry few passengers.

I would like to be a passanger on that plane!!! :D

The fighting lady yellow or a pale green and i mean pale green looks great on the 46 . I would use both of those colors without hesitation. Good luck!!!

I considered a dark hull, but am going to be "mattahorn white" (a pale grey) from the "mids" down, as of this spring.
Several people that I know who earn their livings in this business told me ... "DO NOT paint the hull black or dark blue" .. that was enough for me

I was counting on the dark green with white topsides and beige decks. Its a big commitment that now has me wondering. I did see a BIG GB Alaskan (?) in fire engine red with white uppers and it looked good. I know colors can be a fad, but then white seems so dated also. The fiberglass CC commanders have that cream colored gelcoat which is kinda pleasing. Ice blue ranks up there too. A pal did a 44 Laguna SF in the ice blue and it was the wrong color. Not for the boat, but the color itself was bad. You need to get samples and SCRUTINIZE them in sunlight, not store light. Lay them out where you can walk by and look at them in different light situations for a week or more and then decide.
I still like custom mixes with a touch of pearl, like the new Escalades and Lexus's. All that stupid Snow White on my boat will give you a migraine in the sun. You need burning goggles on the fly bridge. Even the dodger up there has the limo tint mylar on it. ws

I am doing dark blue hull. You have to insulate the boat in order to do it. The fiberglass can deal with it fine. but your inadequate airconditioners are another matter. I am using a radiant barrier R14 insulation material. If you don't insulate you are creating a problem.

I am considering Flag Blue for the area above the side crease. Not sure what this area is called but it would be a very wide stripe fron the rubrail down to the first break, So that about a quarter of the side would be blue and 3/4 Snow white.
All vents, window trin, engine vents will be in the dark area..
Anyone know the proper name of the break / chine that is 3/4 of the way up the side of a Hatteras 53MY or 58YF ?

I would call it the "sheer break" ws

The idea of "spats" is kinda intriguing tho... I may have to play with that idea.
Kind of retro yet a little euro. As long as the color doesnt make the lines look 'squat' it should be neat. Maybe a 2" gold or 1" red stripe separating them. My 36 had a black sheer and looked like crap. I cut that in half (portlite width) and that was the magic size for that boat. Used 1986 Lincoln Continental red corboba leather metalic, base coat clear coat.
We did a 57' Roamer here with awlgrip white, a gray feature and boot stripe and a 3/8 red pinstripe bordering the gray and it turned out sharp.
Believe it or not, look at some of the tupperware stripe kits in ebay for color and width ideas. ( searay and bayliner stripe kits). Theres a million of them too. ws

I think that's called the sheer stripe. I would find a photo of your boat and play around with it, either with markers or PhotoShop. Too many stripes and they tend to look busy. Blue Note used to have that- got rid of it, too many stripes.

All the commercial guys around me call that a mortgage stripe. When the boat is paid off they paint it over the same color as the hull.
I don't make this stuff up.

I painted one of my boats Jade Emerald Green and it was a terrible mistake. The dark color shows off every spec or flaw or slt crystal and it is very hot. I repainted the same boat in Fighting Lady Yellow and I'm very pleased!

my last 3 boats all had flag blue hulls. with proper insulation there was not only no-problem, but the lines of the boats were tremendously enhanced, imo. further, there was no 'extra cleaning required' as the blue shows off the light streaks while the light colors enhance the black streaks...trade off.

the flag blue hulls, all in sofla, held up better than the topsides in all 3 instances, and those boats date back some 15 years...so i wouldn't refer to it as a trend.

now, that being said the 53c is fighting lady yellow...

No one has mentioned this aspect of 'hull colors' - how about resale? I know this is only a question when we approach the 'second best day' in our ownership days, but how does hull color affect resale? Maybe some the forum members which are also brokers can weigh-in?
I saw a 'sky-blue' 61' MY which seems like a nice boat - but it never sells. Is it because is it blue? I suspect the usual colors of dark green, dark blue and cream-white might resale OK. How do the other colors appeal in a buyer's market?

i suspect that the most important consideration is using good taste and creating a color selection with broad appeal. that doesn't mean that you have to choose all-white. it simply has to look nice and for viewers to recognize its appearance as such.

their thought needs to be that the boat looks good...not, "i never would have thought to do that..."
