  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1968 - 1975)
well ... I'm a fool for punishment
I'm selling off my 17 whaler (cheap if anyone is looking) ... and got a 24 Topaz center console. Boat is to be used when going out by myself and fishing. Boat had been down and was bought as salvage. It has a Cummins 6BT 5.9 - 210hp, thought to have been locked up (why i bought so cheap, but it is just the starter that was bad .... yippie.

Question is ... Cummins 6bts went from 210 - 3?? in HP. Can a turbo version be upped in HP and how ?

With the Cummins or the Volvo (the 2 diesel options .. both 200 -210hp) they supposedly cruise around 21kts and burn (here's what I like) 6 - 6.5 gph.
thanks

a mechanic friend recommended a Yanmar 6LYP (he saw the $$$ signs), but with the Cummins workin, I aint lookin for extra expense, althouth 315hp in this thing would be "scorchin" hot.

Congrats on the new boat!

Maybe the moderators should move this post to the Techie section.

Funny how that happens sometimes. ;) I'm glad you caught a break. :)

Going up 100 HP on that engine requires some re-engineering. I'm pretty sure that they used different aftercoolers and may have even gone to a different block by the time they got to those ratings. I know there were problems with head cracking on some of the earlier ones prior to about '91. The sort-of good news is you can usually pick up 10% or so by having the injection pump recalibrated. That's normally within the safety margins most manufacturers. More ponies will require some research to make it reliable.

Need to know the year CPL # that tells all!!! Then we can go from there.
But most cummins B motors are great but some years have thingds to watch for.
