  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Just read an article about the San Diego Harbor Patrol boats. Apparently they are having to replace all their Cummins 5.9 engines at 6,000 hours due to excessive wear. They are putting in 6.7 in think it was that they expect to get 9,000 hours on. These boats run mostly at low RPM’s with occasional high speed runs. Does 6,000 hours sound a little low or is that about right? John

What engine at what HP?

I had a 330 at 11,000 on a navy jet drive rib still kind of running. Ive seen the higher HP beat up and 5K hours is a stretch. By the way 6K hours is not so bad for a small lightweight engine over 300HP.

I have a pair of these . Tough little motors. Rebuilt one at 5000 hours because of overloading while in the hands of the previous owner. Otherwise it would be running fine like its twin. In fact was still producing full power while burning a quart of oil every 60 gallons. My guess is its similar to what happens to police cars. They sit around idling a lot. But also spend a lot of time with the pedal to the metal.

A quart of oil used for 60 gallons of fuel burned? Seems very high.
Now if they were 2 stroke DD's I would understand since most of the missing oil would be in the bilge.
Our CAT 3406's use a quart, or less, of oil for 1000 gallons of fuel burned.
