model 350's, book says they hold 7q oil. port engine is full when 7q added at oil change but starboard shows way over fill. both have exactly the same remote oil filter and exactly the same pan.

Any ideas why the different levels in the pan? could it be how the dip stick tube is mounted? both on inboard side of the engines so they are opposite.

Maynard how do yours work?

Could be as simple as the dipstick or dipstick tube. Are both sticks identical with the add/full mark in exatly the same spot? Are both tubes exactly the same length from the boss where they enter the pan area to the top of the tube.

Often these two items are changed by someone, not realizing that they are not necessarily the same for all engines of the same model. Perhaps an automotive dipstick was substituted for a marine version? The standard passenger car version held 5 qts in the sump so a passenger car dipstick/tube would show overfull with 7 qts.

will measure them next time i go there.

Try switching dip sticks and see what readings you get.....

Are you sure you drained all the old oil out of that high reading engine at oil change time??? To be sure that you sucked it all out, put a cake pan under the dipstick tube fitting where it enters the bottom of the pan. Now remove the tubing nut on the dipstick tube. If you have oil remaining it will run out of that 90 degree fitting.
