  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
37' CONVERTIBLE (1977 - 1982)
The good news is, the circuit beaker did it's job and immediately tripped when the short or heat was detected. Next, maybe I can get some ideas from you guys on how extensive the repair show be after looking at the pictures. The white wire going to the circuit breaker that has a burn will be replaced. But I think the burn source is from the black 6guage wire on the left side of the horizontal buss bar. It looks as though that wire has corrosion that created a hot spot on the buss bar that in turn burned the white wire, the panel box, buss bar.

I would like to replace the entire box including 20amp 120 volt circuit breaker and the grey boat cable
(#6 gauge 3). Does anyone have an idea where I might find this stuff.. Does it exist. Or do I remove the panel and clean up the buss bars replace all the wiring

Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry the pictures are sideways

looks like the white wire might have rubbed thru the insulation from rubbing on the control box and shorted out????

Could well be; the black cable that has a problem is the one on the right, you can see the insulation has burned off the ring terminal. Edit: the more I look at it, it looks like something funky happened with that jumper on the terminal block, like it came loose.

That's 8/3 cable by the way, shown in the pic, not 6. Not sure where that comes into play, everything in the other pics is single.

You can get the triplex here:

The single you can get there or Genuinedealz.com

I have no idea what might have happened from looking at the pics but as far as replacement is concerned, there would be no reason to buy a new panel box unless you particularly want a different box for whatever reason. Just clean up the connections as needed.

As noted, it does look like the white wire may have shorted against the panel BUT, since the white wire is usually connected to the neutral buss bar which is electrically connected to the panel anyway, it shouldn't matter. However, depending on who did the wiring, they may have used white wire on the hot side without suitable tagging.

A multimeter can determine all this easily enough.

I went ahead and ordered the 8/3 wire and connectors, also ordered white, black, red, and purple single 12 with heat shrink connectors from Greg's , thanks for the info...So I will send some more pictures as I disassemble and find all the problem wires.

Take one more look at that first black 8 gauge on the left. I believe it has already been shortened once as evidenced by its white pair having slack. And it having a terminal end different from the others. Behind this terminal the paper sticker has been burned away. Terminal to the right melted on the closest side. Not sure about the jumper that was mentioned, could you be more specific.

Many thanks

GHJ you were right... Second black cable. And a few others..
