These are from one of the 58' YF I am looking at. Price seems reasonable and the interior shots looks like it has been cared for and updated but the engine rooms somehow look a bit messy to me but what do i know!

What the heck is the big red thing in this first picture??? It's in the starboard engine room.

The paddle thing you are referring to is for keeping your shore power cord out of the water and it makes a nice handhold for boarding the boat.

It's both a shorepower cord holder and a grab handle for passengers while boarding. Fits in the rod holders.

Foreget it Chris it's a hand hold only there is another type holder for shore power much smaller mixing end..

The red tank is an old CO2 fire suppression system. It's probably plumbed in to both engine spaces, with sensors to make it discharge when a fire is present.

The enginerooms look typical to better than average for an old boat. They may look worse in person as photos usually lie. Most of the crazies on the forum here will insist that they have better looking enginerooms, but thats only because when they're not online here wanking they're cleaning and degreasing.

The aft deck aluminum gizmo is a handle to hang onto when boarding. It fits into a rod holder. Its a sportfish thing. There's also a shorter version with a "U" shaped thing on the end of the pole that is intended to prop up the electric cord as it passes over the gunwale.

Those old 58 yachtfish boats are really popular old workhorses. Its not easy to find one in nice shape. Most of them have been well used and are just about worn out by now. Hatteras hasn't built them in alot of years. A good specimen 58 YF will probably bring good money. The cost to re-do one is almost prohibitive now days.

So do we happen to have anyone near Louisville that is a resident diesel engine expert and a whiz when it comes to knowing all things hatteras?

I am not sure (no, I am very sure) I don't know enough to buy one of these boats but to say I am intrigued and tempted would be an understatement.

You need to get Doug Shuman to take a detour from his trip south and continue up the Ohio to Louisville. He could really give you a good assessment. I doubt he would do it, though, since he seems to be trying to get away from this cold weather up here.

What timing! I just finished working up an initial offer on the boat you are discussing and was planning on having our broker present it on Monday. Have been on it and watched it off and on for about eight months now (have 2 kids going to University of Louisville and 1 turncoat kid going to UK, so I get to the area a lot). Don't want to get in a public discussion about price and such and I am certainly not trying to disuade you from going after it since there are a few more out there. We have looked at a couple dozen hats from 48 to 58 and looks like the 58 meets most our desires. Including the desire to leave the earth with no dollars remaining! This forum has been a tremendous help and I guess this is my "coming out of the closet" posting. I would love to compare notes with you if have been looking at 58 YFs. Please PM me or even call me at 757-833-6565. We are in the Chesapeake bay area now but will be moving to the Huntsville area before long. That was one of the pluses of the Kentucky boat, short trip down the river. Again though, I don't desire or intend to get into a bidding war, if you are in love with this boat, wave me off. I feel fairly confident it may still be available after my offer anyway. Making it based on seeing virtually nothing move for a long long time.

Well, if you have already physically inspected this boat you are further along than me. I like what I see on the net but not writing an offer tomorrow. Maybe I'll write mine Tuesday? It's definitely a buyer's market though what I have learned of the owner they are not needing to offload it to pay the bills so to speak.

This scenario is nothing new. I've always thought that perhaps every new Hatteras owner came through here first. I just couldn't imagine shopping for a Hatt and not coming through here first! The education I have received is priceless and definitely has saved me thousands of dollars both pre-purchase and after-purchase. Forum member MarioG and I ran neck and neck, unknowingly chasing the same boats for a while. On a couple of them, Ed and I were only a day ahead of him, but it turned out that that's how we met Mario and were able to compare notes - saved him a couple of trips, too. It got to the point that when a broker told me someone else was coming to look at the boat "tomorrow", I would ask, "Is his name Mario"? The look on the brokers' faces.... In the world of serious classic Hatteras shoppers, it is, indeed, a small world, but full of wonderful folks. Even brokers lurk anonymously here to try to size up the buyers. I ran into a few that already knew my plans for the boat when I first met them with opening statements like "So, you want to charter this boat in the islands, do ya?". That's OK; I wasn't hiding anything. LOL

It seems we may be looking for the same type of boat and I am sure will end up helping each other out rather than bidding against each other.
Based on my boating past and what I expect to do in the future, the "N" appeals to me a lot. Cockpit is also a requirement. 48,53,58...still not completely decided. Oh yeah, Hatteras, a definite requirement!

Yup, george and I PM'd each other and it's all worked out. We agreed he is going to buy the boat I was inquiring about but he is going to give ME the keys! Heck of guy that George is! I was initially surprised at his offer to buy my boat for me but as I thought more about it, I had to admit...it was in fact pure genious!


George, like I told you, if you have a change of heart, don't hesitate to tell me. If that occurs, we can go to plan B that we discussed. I'll let you know when I will bring myself, the wife, the two kids, their diapers, baby toys, etc. etc. up to Chattanooga for pick-up; as long as you are willing to drive where we want, when we want, how we want and promise not to complain and abide by our agreement that you will cook the meals, clean the decks, change the diapers (only the 2.5 year old is still in diapers and she is transitioning out so you are lucky!), and run errands to town for us, well, then I am pretty sure we will all have a very good time cruising together. Don't worry though, I'll still chip in my $20 per week for gas money. I'd feel bad if you did all that AND had to pay for all the gas!

this boat is missing something pretty important, a pulpit and a windlass... it can be retrofitted but that's not cheap and i woudln't even think about runnign a boat this size without it....

ERs seem ok although accessibility seems challenging in some spots. that fire bottle shoudl have been placed in the genny room (like mine)... how do you get to the outside of the stbd engine to get to the racors ?

If it had a pulpit I may have made an offer long ago, it is a major factor in the offer we finally came up with, we'll see how that comes out. Does have a windlass though. As far as access, it is tight but seemed doable. I figure a few more months on South Beach will help...

From a brokers standpoint- No one has anything to lose here really. If buyer 1 makes a low offer and the seller doesn't take it, it at least softens him up for the next offer from buyer 2, who still gets a good buy. If the seller takes the low offer from buyer 1 and then the survey reads like a dime store novel, well buyer 2 saves alot of time and money. If the survey is good, then buyer 1 gets a good buy, and buyer 2 has a benchmark sale from which to negotiate on the next boat.

One thing is for sure- In the business of shopping for a 30 year old big boat; you will do a lot of travelling and you will kiss a lot of frogs before finding your princess (or prince in Angela's case).

Nice camaraderie guys thats the way double team the seller .. I only wish I had checked on this site before buying ..I mean I'm happy and all but I sure would have learned alot about the boats and maybe got a better deal. This was the first forum I ever joined and didn't even know what forums where till now and I to pick up alot.
