Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series I (1964 - 1971)
I know this may sound dumb, but it is confusing the heck out of me. 41' hatt convert. with 8v53's and twin disc gears. 4 bladed props right hand and left handed.

When looking at the back of the boat the port prop is left handed and the starboard is the right handed prop. (They went back on the same way they came back from the prop shop and were labeled RH and LH. (They are different from each other.)

The detroits turn counter clockwise when viewed from the rear.

When the port gear is put into the forward position on the gear itself (not the morse control shifter, but the lever on the gear in the engine room) the shaft turns clockwise when viewed from the rear. Same on the starboard gear.

My question would be, in order to go forward with both engines what position does the lever on the gear itself have to be in? Forward or reverse.

We put it together thinking that the gear would turn the same direction as the engine when the gear lever is in the forward position, but it turns the opposite. Just want to get your input before I switch the cables on the controls all around and launch her. I am not good when it comes to looking at a prop and knowing if it pushes or pulls. Once again, she is in dry dock.

Thank you.

From what you've described here, the port shifter (on the transmission) will have to go into reverse. This is usually done by putting the shift cable on the opposite side of the helm control lever so the lever goes forward to put the gear in "reverse". The port shaft should turn counterclockwise looking at it from the rear. Twin-Discs will run continuous duty in both directions. This is not necessarily true of other transmissions.

Twin disc gears can be set to run either way, i.e. can be in reverse to actually run forward, look at the position of the shift lever at the gear box, one may in different position than the other when both shift levers on helm in forward etc.

Seems to make sense that I will have to change my cable positions on the helm. This is what I figured since the shaft turned opposite from the engine when we fired up the engines.

Thanks!!!
