crankcase ventilation

I am about to tackle the crankcase ventilation job and would like to know if this is what you guys call a crap can? I am assumeing it is full of oil and needs to be cleaned out. I stopped by cat today and ordered some parts but they didn't seem to know what this was. They thought it was added by the boat builder. I have a 1985 conv 36 foot with twin 3208 cats with turbos. The hoses look original and are seeping oil. In the service manual there is something about the crankcase ventiltor valve but not this thing. Just thought I would ask before I tear it apart. The hose from the top goes to the air cleaner and the bottom hose goes to the "T" and over to the ccv on the other side.......Thanks Rick

If you have Cats, that's the best place to pursue this issue.

It's an oil separator. It has 3 filters in it. Part number 4W2579 is the filter group,4W8473 is the Separator group and 4W2576 is the element. Numbers may have changed but your Cat dealer should be able to find what you need.

Hey Dennis...Went to Cat on Monday in Richmond and showed them a picture but they were unable to tell me what is was......Crazy Horse sent me a couple of pictures out of a Cat service manual and I faxed them to Cat today... they found what it was after that but said nobody there knew what it was before that...mmmmm...Rick
