Hatteras Model
58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
Look out you guys, here comes a serious Hatt related question that will hopefully yield some serious Hatt related answers.

Good news, my mechanic finally got his new borescope. Bad news, I'll be paying for it and then some. He said he quit looking after the third cylinder, not exactly what I wanted to hear.

I trust this guy, but I want to help keep him honest. Can anyone tell me what I should expect to pay to rebuild this engine? He's going to work up a quote for me, but I'd like to know what you guys think or have run into on a 12V71N rebuild.

By the way, see ya'll at the CDR this weekend!

How far do you want to go with that engine, PARTYBIRD? The basic rebuild cost should be somewhere in the neighborhood of $2-3k per hole. You don't have turbos to worry about, so that's something of a blessing. You can count on swapping out all your injectors. How's the blower? How's the governor? Probably won't know until the parts start dropping off of it.

The cost can start going up with taking care of a bunch of things you really should while it's all taken down (i.e. meticulously painting everything while the access is really good, for instance). How are your reinforced FC Aeroquip-type hoses? If they're tired, now would be the the time, and that would be extra. You know the way it is. Ch-ching! :D

To be safe, budget $50k, and every boat buck below that is a nice layaway for other Freebird fix-me-ups.

Lets see here....$3,000 X 24 = $72,000. Without turbos and such, the price should be closer to $2,000 X 24 = $48,000. OOOOUCH! I know a diesel guy in that area if you need a 2nd estimate. His name is Bill Clarke and I will see if I can find his # for you.

Holy hopping snot! Randy "would you please pass the jelly" Register actually started a serious thread. Where's my calendar?! I've got to write this down. ;)

Sam's has a pair of low-hour takeouts for only $20,000 for the pair.

Even with the labor to swing them you'll probably still come out ahead. :D

I'm thinking Randy is only doing the one motor. Could be wrong.

a local shop in Orlando that does lard diesels told me that they couls rebuild my 8v53 if needed ( luckilly they are running good) for $5k each. I know the $2-3 K rule for most engines is on the money but the old detroits seem to be less.

Can the engines be removed from the boat or is it one of the " has to be done in frame" ones?

Randy told me only one engine. engine rebuild was due to his ill-fated attempt to opperate this boat for the first time. blew oil line and burned out the engine. I dont pretend to know anything about these engines but it would appear he only needs stuff done that the lack of oil damaged. Since injectors are run by the cam does that mean they are warn also?

Now for 20k for a pair of take outs, he can install one of them and keep the other for a spare or resell it. Then the question is what is needed to take one of these out?

I told Randy Sams Had a take out pair and thats the way I'd go.. also I told him I just rebuilt mine at $ 24,000.00 per engine you can e-mail my mechanic at bilgerat2@aol.com his name is Ralph out of Lauderdale he's good .

Carl, do you have the N or Ti?

His initial post said "N."

$20k for two good-running naturals is a great deal. Install one and keep the other!

Paul, that was directed to Carl G. not Randy ;) .

Carl has 8v92TA's, I think.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the input. I'm headed to FL now for the CDR. Enjoy the peace and quiet while I'm gone! :D

I'll try to check in on the less fortunate (non-CDR attenders) if somebody down there has a laptop that hasn't been drowned in beer!

I thought that the 58 TC required the hull side to be cut out to R & R the engines. Seems if you are going to go to the trouble of cutting the hull, you would want to be sure the the best 2 out of 3 are in the boat.

Hay I have 12v71 ti I think ti means turbo right I do have turbo and 770 hp each engine .. and I did verify Randy is headed down and we where piling the stores up all day and toped the boat off 1350 gallons I'm ready to go anywhere right now :D and I have worked on the boat all week so everything is ship shape and working :D It's amazing how you think everything works but it is hard to get everything 100% at one time  It's like an obssetion now so if you board my boat try any switch and let me have it if it dosent work :p

If you have to cut the hull to get the engines in and out put all 3 in so you have a spare.
