  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' YACHT FISHERMAN (1972 - 1975)
Hi All,

Does anyone know if the helm floor in my 74 yachtfish is cored or solid?

I'm not speaking of the cockpit but the helm area floor which is the ceiling of the master stateroom.

Thanks

I would guess it was cored as any deck, but know of nothing to back that up. It's just what I suspect.

It really is the salon roof and ours is balsa cored as I am sure most of the older boats are. I was told that in the late 80s, they switched to foam coring in the salon roof. What is your's Sky?

The bridgedeck roof (flybridge floor), the salon roof, cockpit floor and the forward deck and catwalks are all cored.....so I'm guessing so is the bridgedeck floor...

Mine is balsa cored.

None of those answer his question. He is talking about the floor of the lower helm area or the roof of the master bedroom. Not sure about the layout of the '74 YF myself, the only 58YF I've been on the actual lower helm was a good distance forward of the msr. Aren't most of the floors in the salon proper, (not the aft deck, which is what is over the msr in many) of these boats simply plywood? Anyway, if he has found fiberglass in the area in question, then yes it is cored.... did Hatteras use solid fiberglass for decking on any boat?

The helm on the 48YF is on the back deck. It is fiberglass above, below and all around. This is not like a forward pilothouse 53,56,58, etc. It is most like the 41,43,44 DC with respect to the helm.

Thanks Sky, the length of his boat wasn't in his post. OT, am I correct in my assumption about interior salon/helm floors?

Yes, I think you are correct about the forward PH boats.
