  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1977 - 1980)
We have the 4 stateroom 4 head model. It’s a lot of small rooms with tiny showers and small beds for a 58. I’m thinking about converting the over/under bunk room to a new modern head and tearing out the original head to make room for a centerline queen. We would then have 3 staterooms and 3 heads, but much more livable.

What’s your opinion?

Does anybody know if any interior walls are structural?

The new head would be a Jack and Jill open to the stateroom or the hall. It would have room for a large floor to ceiling closet open to the stateroom with a self contained unit in the bottom serving both spaces.

That’s what I’ve done on my 53. I ve gutted the entire bow, including the old head and the washing machine closet

It s right for a queen but a double fits fine with just two small corner cutting at the head of the mattress

I m building a head where the dinette used to be, roughly 4 x6’ which is a pretty decent size. If I m not mistaken the 58MY has a smaller dinette / desk doesnt it? Big enough for a head?

Should have thought of that 17 years ago.

Here are some pics. New head, vented washer dryer combo will be in the space under the sink. Water heater is behind the panel. Head will be in the middle and behind the door I ll have a 40x24 shower. Found the pan from an RV place.

Built a small vanity in the port aft corner of the SR. It was a bit tricky to built since it s all angles... then on aft stbd corner is a hanging closet

Thanks Pascal that’s very helpful. How high off the floor is the mattress base? Looks like a few inches higher and you could do away with the cut corners. That’s a full?

How are you accessing storage under the mattress?

Yes that’s a full. It s already fairly high and I thought that any higher to avoid cutting corners will be too high. Could have moved it toward the door a few inches with a shelf behind but I didn’t want to sacrifice any space

I have a large one piece cutout which eventually will be hinged near the head with gas lifts so the whole mattress lifts. Much easier than multiple smaller batches. Due to the height there is a huge amount of space

Don’t try it without removing the head, I did and was able to get a decent angled berth in but it was just to hard to climb in and out so I junked it, removed the head and built my wife a huge sewing room in the space. John
