Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
We fired up my boat (48 Series I 1982 MY) to move it to my regular slip and engaged the stb transmission to start out of the slip. A few seconds later I needed to shift the port into reverse. Aaaak - it's stuck, won't move into forward or reverse. Fairly tight fairway and the bow of the boats in front of me were coming up fast. Thankfully very light wind and no current so I was able to complete my move to my slip with the stb engine and lots of back and forth rudder coupled with lots of fwd/rev shifting.

An investigation of the ER showed a bent end on the control cable where it connects to the tranny. I had just had some work done and the mechanic apparently squeezed into where he should not have. I'm 6'6", 245 lbs and he's wider than me. Oh well, we removed the damaged cable and measured it at 30 feet.

My question after all the long winded explination above is, has anyone any suggestions as to which is the best cable? I googled Discount Boat Supplies and they show 3 models ranging from mid $40's to $60.00. Thanks

Walt

The morse supreme has always been near the top, but now that teleflex owns morse, I am not sure there is much difference. The Uflex supreme cables are very smooth as well.

side question;
should the cables be lubed? every few years and if so - how?

I had a shift cable break last year while away from my home port. Got a new one overnited from Sams. We have the same boats.

Certain of the Morse line are lined with teflon, which would eliminate the need for lube, maybe even preferred not lubed.

It is possibe to entirely remove the cable from the sheath/run to lube it, but that's only done where there is a fairly straight run, such as on drill rigs. All I know...

I'm now in the process of replacing my shift cable on the stb side tranny after I also had some engine work done. It was starting to shift hard into reverse and it turned out to be slightly bent at the transmission bracket.
I'm going to order another shift cable from Sams but cannot find the part number supposed to on it. I'll be back on the boat this morning and continue looking for the proper part no. but would appreciate any information what cable to order for a 45 ft. 85yr SF conv.

Thanks,
Al
