  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
Has any one ventured out on to the ICW or Bay since the storm? I'm wondering about new shoals and floating debris. We resume the trip tomorrow.

From where to where.

We are in Cape Charles, VA. Headed to Florida after a maintenance stop at Atlantic Yacht Basin, so virtually 1000 miles worth, although I expect Florida will be more or less OK. Say VA, NC, SC and GA.

Suggest Active Captain. So far it's been accurate for conditions in SC. And the ICW in SC (especially approaching Charleston Harbor from IOP to Sullivans) is BAD.

A call to your towing company's local branch and the USCG for the areas of concern is a good idea; I always found the Towboat US units along the Carolinas to be excellent on conditions and how to avoid becoming a claim (even though not in their best interest, the blowback from giving bad info would be worse).

I haven't ventured out on the NC ICW yet and won't until this weekend, but I can tell you the upper Neuse near New Bern has all sorts of flotsam; we live right on the river and the amount of debris and lumber on our beach is large. The water was up about four feet from normal for a few days, and is now about 2 feet up.

Bob,

We are almost to Daytona and nothing out of the normal so far. Planning Beaufort,SC by Monday.

There will be loads of debris for sure!

Came down from NC September 1st going to Key West. Only issues were in SC and GA. We came through all the bad spots at or near high tide. Active Captan is right on.

Daughter lives in Beauford SC she said all kinds of stuff in front of Dataw Mariner near monkey island, She and her husband took a small boat ride looking at damage today. They live on Lucy creek just off the waterway. They did not go in the icw still a little rough their boat is a 23 foot riddick bay.
I was in Morehead city today towboat had a searay or carver in tow hit something bent both wheels came to the mariner to be hauled up.... I did not speak to them they were motel hunting....

Thanks all. We'll haul at AYB for a couple of days then resume the trip. Hope it clears up some. I actually gave a thought to leaving it there for the winter. :(

In Chasn yesterday I saw more debris than Ive ever seen in out marina and water coffee colored. On the bright side the tides have been higher than usual.

No first hand knowledge of current conditions but given the amount of flooding and how far reaching it was, I'd sit tight for at least a few days. As mentioned the amount of debris will be huge. Hard enough dodging all the floating debris but think about what floated out and sank. The first boats to venture out will find the obstructions in the waterways the hard way. Give it time for obstructions to be removed or at least marked.

I could be happy getting stuck in Manteo or beaufort, NC but some of these marinas will sock it to ya in slip fees. I cant wait til the spring when we can venture up to NC and get back to our old stomping grounds. I would be very cautious right now. I bet the santee and wacamaw rivers are full of stuff. Heck they have trees floating down stream anyway.

Recalling Isabelle - the biggest issue, aside from debris, was services along the ICW. Marinas were really banged up, fuel pumps and elec was out, etc. At one point, we had to bum a ride to a service station for enough fuel just to get to the next working fuel dock.

Def call ahead to confirm what you are expecting is still there and will be avail. Of course, that all predates Active Captain and the like, but from my nightmare I would still want to hear it myself.

You could always run offshore, nice blue ocean water and you don't have to steer. Just sit back with a coffee, watch your gauges and enjoy the ride.

If the weather is good and you stay clear of where that debris eventually ends up.....

The place to watch is north of Myrtle beach and south of Southport . That area always has crap in the water W/O high water. Especially around or just before Pawley's Island SC. To add to the issue it is dark water and hard to see stuff in it....
