  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
42' LRC - Mark I (1976 - 1978)
I have compressors on DD-453's. From the engine manual I can determine that they are piston type and that they are not oiled from the engine. My question is, being piston and old they must take oil, what oil do they take?
I am not presently at the boat again until later next week so I cannot climb down and check anything yet.

I'm assuming your talking about direct drive air compressors on the engines back side. Probably next to your raw water pump.
The Bendix Tu-Flo styled air compressors that I am familiar with, do have a external oil line fed to them. This oil line may come from the engine at the turbo oil supply block or the oil pressure sender block. This line then connects to the compressors case towards the rear, away from the engine.
The excess oil returns back to the engine thru the gear coupling.

A metal tag may be riveted on the air compressors case to help ID the model.
There also should be an air filter to service.

You might be right. I will have to check when I get back to the boat. I suspect you are right on Bendix as I removed a Bendix air dryer that was spewing air out the bottom with a broken (drain/heater control).

I am slowly working towards reviving the Matlack stabilizers that have not been used in a very long time. I don't have a manual or any info on the system. It appears to be 100% air driven.
