  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
60' MOTOR YACHT (1987 - 1989)
While doing a routine engine room check I noticed water dripping from the bottom of our air compressor storage tank. Obviously the tank is rusting through. I’m in northern Michigan so replacing the tank is not an option. Suggestions? Can I just disconnect the lines from the tank and allow the air from the compressor off the motor to flow into the ER?

You could (probably should) connect the line to the line to the governor, likely 1/4", to allow the compressor to unloader valve to open and unload the compressor. It will run cooler and reduce load.

You can likely get replace the tank at any truck parts house, like NAPA. The tanks I have seen in most boats are standard truck trailer style, 29.5 inches and 1500 ci.in.

You can just open the value at the bottom of the tank where it collects the water. It will make a high pitch whistle while running. However best practice is to replace the tank.

They don’t sell air tanks in northern Michigan ?

Thank you for the help. I’ll open the valve to limp it home. I’m sure somewhere up here I could get a replacement bottle but we’re in North Port which a very small but nice town for a night then on to Leland which also very small. Maybe if I had a car but I really don’t want to deal with it until we get back to Sturgeon Bay.

I looked up compressor air tanks and they seem to sell them and ship them everywhere. You might try Grangers if you have one local. They even sell them at Harbor freight in Home Depot and Lowe’s. They probably don’t have the one size that you need but at least you can order it through Granger.

Thanks Rusty, Grainger is just down the road from us in WI and I have a return so tomorrow I’ll measure the tank and place the order. Just starting cocktail hour as we speak! Priorities.

Dave,
I have a used tank off of my boat if you want it. Can't guarantee its in much better shape but it didn't leak when I took it out.
