  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
has anybody used a composite propane tank? i am looking for one to use on my magma grill (instead of using those little cans) i grill quite a bit when on board, and those small tanks dont last very long, and they get expensive. it will only be used on the grill, nothing indoors, not hard plumbed, just a hose to hook to the grill. it will be stored in an outdoor cabinet, above deck. any pros, cons, or input, brand name, etc.... thanks bigbill

Hey Bill... we heat the sub all winter on 40 lb propane cylinders. Mine are aluminum (not horizontal fork lift units!) and are about 20 lbs lighter than steel, and wont rust. It would run yer magma all year for sure!! ws

YachtsmanBill, you have no idea how much BigBill grills! He is one of the top BBQ Chef's on the entire Gulf Coast. Moody's has already put out a recommendation out to "sell" all Coleman stock as they heard BigBill was going to stop buying the little propane cans! LOL :)

Who me? I'm not incognito, I've just been too busy this last month or so to be able to spend as much time playing on the HOF as I used to. What, you miss me? You're too kind! :)

SOOOOO what did you buy?????????

NOTHING just yet.......I promise that I will let you guys know just as soon as I buy another boat. As you all know, a deal is not a deal until it has actually closed. I have not gotten to that point with any boat just yet so for now, I am still without.

No idea on a composite propane tank, but i have to agree with Byron.
BIGBILL is pretty good on the grill and his breakfast is pretty good too, The best response i have heard about Bills breakfast is,

"HE HAD TO HAVE WORKED AT WAFFLE HOUSE"

Hey Bill next time we get together I'll bring a new BBQ sauce.
Your doing the cooking!!!

My neighbor put one of these on his 43' Viking. It is a really neat unit. It is see through so you can always tell how much propane you have. He grills all the time and afaik one tankfull is lasting all Summer. He keeps it in a deck box fwd as his grill is mounted on a bow rail. (His stern deck is enclosed )

Bill not sure what size your cabinet is/will be, but check out defender.
They have a unit that is the same size as the steel units.
It's composite and see thru.

looks like the only company that makes one that fits in my cabinet is the lite cylinder company. they make a 10lb tank that is 9.7 inches dia. and 17 inches tall. my opening is 12 inchs exactly... all of the other companies have them 12 inches and bigger. i would like more capacity, but i am afraid that the 12 inch tank wont fit my 12 inch opening after i get it. 10lbs should last a pretty long time on my grill. thanks for the input. bigbill

The website says it's 12 inches in diameter. I'll measure it and let you know the exact dimensions on Friday. I have 4 tanks and can send you one if it would work. I had an alumininum tank before this for home use and it was great but needed a hydrostatic test tha was a hassle to drop off and pick up and pay for. The propane places don't want to deal with it too. These glass tanks were about $50. They are light weight and don't scratch anything or make a mess.

The pigs are starting to run for the hills once they found out BigBill will not have to stop and reload. Non stop cooking.
Breakfastlunchsnackdinnermidnightsnack. Its gonna be great.

Now, how to get beer in 5 gallon cans.....

Jimmy

hey fixin-to-cruise, have you had a chance to measure that ragasco tank? i'm ready to purchase my tank now, everything else is ready, just about out of the little cans. bigbill

UPDATE....i purchased a 10lb 2.5gallon capacity tank (the lite cylinder co.) 85.00 dollars plus shipping. it is clear enough to see the level of the liquid in it, so, no more guessing how much propane i have. i do recommend these to anyone in the market for a new tank... it's filled with propane and ready to go. wont use it until after FLIBS. look out pigs............ bigbill

Nice. Do they make 20lb versions? Oh, as a BBQ god...how the HELL can you stand having a Magma? I couldnt take it anymore and put a full sized all stainless Weber Genesis on the flybridge.

stormy, yes they do make a 20lb model. oh, buy the way, when you really know how to bbq, you dont need a fancy grill, you can cook over a campfire. i love my magma. bigbill

A Magma is made for a boat. A Webber is made for your backyard. There is no way to safely secure a full size home gas grill on a boat. That might be okay if you're just a river boater, but if you get into real seas, you might regret ever having it on deck.

Bill has the biggest Magma they make and it is bolted to his handrail, so it is going nowhere. I have seen him put just about everything on that grill and everything has come out excellent.
