  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
Yeah, I know, I change directions like a drunken sailor in a heavy fog without a compass. But I'm just covering all my options.

Anybody know what it would cost to do an extension on my 58TC?

Mine was 200 K in '95 with FULL LENGTH spray rails !!. Buy the boat for 75K now and get 2 free 12-71s PLUS a ton of other stuff. Viente chicanos con mucho sudando= barquo magnifico

Call Cable Marine in Ft Lauderdale. They have done plenty of them. Same place as where the 70 ft. Ice Blue monster is located.

I told you not to take down too many things on that boat just in case you wanted to sell it. Remember demolition is easy but do one room at a time and fix as you go. If you took that aft room disco celling off and the fuzy carpet off the walls then you got one hell of a project just repalcing that , so just fix what absolutly has to be done and put her on the market for a live aboard if thats what you want :) Beside that will give you more cruiesing time :D But I gotta say there's nothing I like more than haven a beer on the back of a project boat working on her and figuring out how to go about putting her together. And if your out there Randy J rember the project boat also takes away your family time so talk to them also or get them involved ;)

Thanks dude, at least I know where those guys are. It's funny, I didn't see that much blue in that ice blue. But as I admitted earlier, I'm color blind.

Call the guys at Cable and tell them I'm coming, would you? Tell them to look for the guy wearing a pink shirt with yellow shorts.

Randy, It is a good thing that you did not wear that pink shirt and yellow shorts when I took you to look at the 70. We may not have been allowed in to see the boat! :D

IMHO, it is not worth the money and hassle involved to extend a 1510 hull boat. There are a lot of good deals to be had on cpmys (with 18' 3" beam) out there. You get alot more boat with the bigger beam...............Pat

Just got off the phone with a very nice guy at Cable Marine who very politely told me I would be out of my mind to do a cockpit extension, period. He said they had not done one in several years.

I had figured on about $100k at the outside, but the starting price turns out to be more like $175k for the "economy" model. I believe this was a 15'10" x 6' piece of marine plywood hinged on the existing transom with pontoon flotation as the top end price was about $250k. Then there was the issue of matching paint etc. Fagetaboutit!

Oh well, guess the cheap way out wasn't the cheap way out after all.

In the immortal words of Donald Duck: badea badea...... that's all folks!!! :)

Sorry, don't want to be picky but I believe that was "Daffy Duck" not Donald. It is important to keep you duck in a row you know!

It's that damned MTV and Dora the Explorer! We're just Coke drinkers in the Pepsi generation. :D

Randy,
I ran a 60' Hatteras (a 53' with 7' extension installed in S. Florida) for the owner in 2003. It had several problems due to having extra struts put on and extensions on the shafts. (Was named "Nano Nano" and based in Miami when the new owner bought it).
Twice we had to have the extra strut (port side) fixed due to vibration and once the connector on the shaft extension came loose (starboard side).
Also the boat handled differently (not bad, just differently) than the other 53's I have driven. A boat built for one size will act differently when additions are put on....

I was always under the impression that the running gear should remain in the original position and the extention built over it. That way you do not fool with added hardware and the extention acts as a big trim tab which helps put the boat up on plane better and many times increases cruising and/or top end speed.

With this set up, the boat supposedly has similar slow speed handling to a stock vessel.

Okay boys, thanks for all the replies, but I've given up on the idea of an extension. It is just too danged expensive with no hope of recovery if I got tired of it.

One thing that was brought up by the guy at Cable Marine was they always add extra fuel tanks etc. in the extension to keep things loaded evenly (as far as stress on the extension). I never thought of that, but it makes sense.

A lightweight expanse of hull at the stern may cause the boat to do funny things in relation to the rest of the hull. This, he said, was yet another piece of the very large puzzle in the expense involved in a cockpit extension.

I know a guy who put a cockpit extension on a 60' Ocean Alexander. He didn't need extra fuel capacity, so he sunk a hot tub into the cockpit sole. It had a hinged cover over it, so you didn't even know it was there. He said that they rarely used it, but it added the extra ballast that was needed to make the boat handle correctly.

Hey, that sounds like more fun than extra fuel! I already have a bow tank in addition to the 850 gallons in the belly tanks, so I wouldn't need extra fuel.

$175k for an extension with a hot tub? Could prove to be money well spent huh?

The problem is that you need the extra ballast while running, but you can't leave the water in the hot tub while running....so I doubt that it would work out well. The water would never stay in there in seas!

I think that issue was addressed in this case. The hatches covering the hot tub locked down and sealed so that water could not splash out.
