  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
I know this is a Hatteras forum. But...... What do you guys know about the Cheoy Lee Bravo series 2008 vintage. Cat 3412 engines.

The 3412Es are great. Cheoy Lees are ok but watch cruise speed and fuel burn... often disappointing

Over the years I have heard different things about CL yachts- some very favorable, some quite negative. I am interested to see what people post here. I have not personally been on too many of them.

It seems all the systems are American made. Cat, Naiad, Northern Lights. The people that like them say they ride nice and they are dry running in seas. The people that don’t like them can’t point to specific reasons. Except that they won’t hold value as well as Hatteras or Pacific Mariner.

Years ago (at least 20) I checked out a small Cheoy Lee trawler as a possible second boat to leave in So Fla rather than make the annual trek up and down from NJ with the seasonal changes. While it looked good and passed the 20 ft test, once I got aboard, it became obvious that the boat had many issues. All the decks were covered with teak and were very flexible due to the rot under them. There were other issues but not as serious. The boat was kind of spartan overall. I decided not to go ahead with it even though the price was very low. I do like the looks of the late models generally but after a lifetime of boating including 4 Hatteras', I don't think I would ever consider any other brand. As has been stated many times on this forum by me and others....if your plan is to buy a boat and keep it for a long time, to me it makes much more sense to buy the Hatteras of your choice and spend some money making it what you want while keeping in mind that you will not recover your money. I never understood the thinking that when you buy the boat and use it for some time, that you should recover everything you put into it. We need to consider what the price of pleasure and memories are worth.

We spent 4 nights on a CL 80 last weekend at FLIBS and had a nice cocktail dinner cruise. It had CAT 3412s I believe. Loaded with Garmin electronics, NAiad digital stabs, hydraulic bow thrusters on the GenSet, 2 chillers for AC. I think it was around year 2000. Have to say we were impressed with fit and finish. Our queen berth forward was a little tight but we are spoiled with the master on our Hatt. The heads were like a Ritz Carlton. The owner said he paid $800K about 3 years ago, and had another $250k in it. For the quality, money, and timelessness, I would take our Hatt any day, but this CL was a very nice boat.

I have been on a couple of Choey Lee boats over the years and thought they were ok boats. My favorite CL is the 72 RPH cockpit model. Great long range fishing design.
