Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
My Hatteras still has both her original fuel fill caps, but the chain is broken on one of them- just a short piece left, and the rest no doubt down in the tank somewhere. Does anyone know where to get a replacement chain and the hook on the end of it that holds it into the fuel fill hose? I asked Sam's about this a few years back and they did not have them.

Also, does anyone know the name of this item, other than "chain that keeps the fuel fill cap from falling overboard"?

Google Suncor deck hardware. They show those chains and sell larger chain as well. You might get their number from the website and call them about the SS chain and eye. If successful write back and let us all know.

Will do and thank you. I checked Sam's again and they don't seem to have it. Not under any of the keywords I could think of, anyway.

Suncor does not sell the chain as a separate item. I'm going to try McMaster-Carr, we'll see if they have it.

Okay, McMaster has something called a stainless steel lanyard, 12" long, for about two bucks. I ordered two of them. It looks like stainless ball chain with an eye on each end. This might do the trick. Full report to follow :)

I will have to figure out how to make the spring clip on the far end of the lanyard which keeps it from coming out of the fill pipe, but I should be able to do that with some stainless wire, if I can find some stiff enough.

I used stainless braided wire that I use to make deep drop rigs. Put one end in the hole of the filler neck. Put a crimp on the end that you just passed through the hole. On the cap, make a loop and a crimp. Mine has been on for 3 years with no signs of wear. I don't make a loop on the filler neck so that when you install the cap, the cable slides down through the hole and doesn't bunch up in the filler neck.

Can you post a photo or two? I'm not following you on this, but I think I ought to see how you did it.

Jim, Not elegant, but I have made these from thin SS cable and large wire lugs for ends. So far, none has broken. Still, it would be nice to have a source.

Don't have a pic of mine, but here is a drawing.

Got it. Mine was made a bit differently- one end of the ball chain attaches to a screw into the back of the full cap (I think- I am not on the boat now) and the other one attaches to a large SS spring made of wire, that keeps it from coming back up the tube. I can rig something with SS wire, it may not look like the other side, but that's okay as long as it keeps the cap from going overboard.

When a fuel fill cap falls into the water you usually hear two noises, the first is ker-plunk followed by ah-s..t.

I'll report back on whether the McMaster chains will do the job. If they do, at two bucks each they are a bargain.
