SeaSchool in Freeport.

Their help with getting your documents in order AFTER the exam, is also excellent.

Guy teaching the class was in the Merchant marine for 40 years or something, his sea tales used to illustrate points while teaching. Outstanding.

I guess its a lot easier today with all these schools. when I got my 6 pack in 1973 It was a self study deal and the test took 2 days. there was a whole section on Celest nav. and the second day was mostly local knolege for the area you were applying for. I think I had Sandy hook to cape Charles. None of it was open book and you had to memorise the costal pilot.I went for the Ocean operator the next year when I turned 19 and then got the Master 1600ton a few years later. Keeps getting more expensive every renewal. The last one I had to jump theu a bunch of hoops to get the new TWIC card.

I went to SeaSchool....
4 hrs a nite Mon-Fri plus 8 hrs on Sat And Sunday...
then took the test the following Saturday for my 6 pack...
Then took a 3 day class and took the test for the Masters....
"Think" now days the school as add a 2nd weekend of classes for the 6 pack
The nice thing was/is, they have classes in my city so no major driving was needed

I remember there was no class to pass the test in the mid 80's when I studied for the 100 ton ocean operator. It was for a specific area and you had to show experience in the area and on the equipment. I think the test was at Govenors Island at GCHQ for the district back then. Today the school is to pass the test and not much more. No celestial navigation. No practical experience. And then you get to go to the local TSA office and have a guy whose name you can't pronounce do a background check on you? No way.

Not to say it was always better in the old days.

Remember Frank Mundis from Jaws fame. he was a charter boat captain for many years. Ran into a problem one year when he forgot to renew his license in advance and then was unable to take the test as he claimed to be unable to read and write.

My dad and a bunch of his buddies used to charter the Crickett 11 long before Jaws. He has some super 8 movies somewhere of Mundus taking potshots at bluesharks with his 30-30.

He was a character. He ran that boat for years and had lots of stories. The one I though interesting is how he started shark fishing. Long story short it was easier than going after the other big stuff like tuna.
