  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
We will be making our trip down the ICW in April and have used this software for Atlantic passages in Virgin Islands, etc etc -- Now we have a MAC computer and it doesn't appear to be compatible -- has anyone used this - or know if you can buy a program for the MAC to be able to use this software?

How does this compare to Active Captain - is it at all the same

Thanks

I think The Capt'n software for navigation is not related to Active Captain. You can't use the latter for navigation.

There are a number of options for software ranging from free to hundreds of dollars. Most run on Windows. Not sure what Mac users use.

MacENC is the best full suite navigation software for the Mac, in my opinion. It uses the free NOAA ENC and raster charts. Customer support is fantastic. Upgrades to new versions are free and they are very open to user suggestions. You could e-mail them and they will help you with making the conversion (transporting waypoints, routes, etc) if possible. There is also a fairly active user's forum.

Also, once you buy one copy, you are set for multiple computers or when you get a new computer. Really a nice company to do business with.

I have maptech.
i am very happy with it.

1. Make sure you have paper back up

2. Check to make sure you have the charts downloaded for a harbor before you head into an inlet. (i made that error once)

I'm running Navionics on my MacBook Air as well as a Droid pda. Both work well.
I also purchased an ipad2 yesterday and plan to install it on there as well. I'm already running ActiveCaptain on all three, along with Navimatics Tides & Charts (not for navigation).

Yes, I'm an amateur techy, but love all of these tools on the boat!!

If you like the Cap'n software and want to run it on a Mac (and it's a PC only software), you can buy a program called Parallels (it's available on line). Install Parallels on your Mac. It's a PC virtual computer (runs windows inside a Mac windows). From there you can install and run anything PC. You will also need a copy of the Windows operating system to install (sounds like you might already have that). I've been running some esoteric PC only programs for the past 11 years via Paralelles on the Windows 95 operating system and it works great.
