Can't get the impeller out.

I Have v8 71s and trying to replace my fresh water impellers. First I tried with 2 screwdrivers, that didn't work, so now I bought the recomended impeller puller that digs into the impeller. It slips also used some wd40 what's next? Any advise?
 
Remove the pump and work on it on a bench. In the long run it save time and skin off your knuckles.

spray the lube in the cavity then turn engine over 1 turn. That usually does the trick.
 
Mine had the splined shafts. I used to use marine white grease on it but still had the impeller stick to the shaft. I had my mechanic turn me on to this pink salt water proof grease from Flamingo oil co. work great, even use it on the shaft to prop contact. I think it was formulated for trailer bearings but I use it for anything that has salt running thru it.

Thanks I'll try to turn over the motor then maybe removing the whole pump. What about some heat?
 
If you can pull the pump do it. You probably will need seals and maybe bearings if its really stuck on the shaft. Might need a shaft too.
 
Before you pull the pump do the screwdriver thing and while your holding pressure get someone to tap on the shaft with a brass drift pin. Dont get too radical you'll mushroom the end of the shaft. Dont poke your eye out.
 
If you pull the impellers somewhat regularly this won't happen. I pull them when I winterize and they come out easily. I pull them, place them in very hot water so they lose the "set" they took in the engine and then put them aside until spring. I used to install a new RW impeller on engines/genny every season but now I do it every other. But the impellers still come out every winter. In addition to insuring your impellers are always in perfect shape, it pretty much eliminates ever having pieces of impeller in your Intercoolers/HE

Your puller shouldn't dig into the impeller, it should hook over the end of the fins, at least mine does and its a really simple process to pull, however it is a real pistol if your trying to do it with screwdrivers etc.
 
I have created a puller that does not dig in and gouge, but pulls the impeller fairly easily, without invasive results. I finally got some pix (b4 camera died), so can post what I have.
 
If I recall there is a ring type spring spacer at the back ..inside....of the impeller....keeps the impeller tight against the front faceplate..

So can one also safely whack the end of the impeller central housing to help loosen it???

I wonder if this "sticking" is more of an issue with the older bronze shafts or the newer SS?? I think I've had each and only change my impellers at about four or five year intervals...around 500 hours..and never had any seized...I used the silver color "Neverseize" goop...

I've never seen any spring unless your talking about the shaft seal on the water side. every pump I've seen the impeller rides directly on the wear plate.With the wear plate off you should be able to see the end of the splined shaft.
Never use Neversieze unless its the marine grade. Look at the content its a mix of dissimilar metals. In the right conditions it will weld your parts together.

that was a wave washer to keep tension on the seal. Have not used them in 20 years.
 
anti-seize causes seizing?
 
I'll keep you guys posted. Haven't been able to get to the boat yet, mabey tomarrow. I modified the impeller puller so that the prongs are more like hooks and very sharp, meanwhile it's been sprayed with wd40. And I don't think the puller could get behind the impeller because it's pressed against the back of the pump.
 
Yea the pump shaft and impeller center are bronze.

Once the pump is off, drill and tap 2 #12-24 holes into the hub as close to the shaft as is comfortable, and put a "strongback" across it with a pair of allen screws (hard stuff!) and tighten a jack bolt in the center.
Dont drill and tap ONTO the shaft as this will only make for a locking screw situation. The shaft is probably 3/4" and the hub diameter is about 1-1/2 (guessing). That leaves 3/8 for a fudge factor...
Silver never sieze is nickle and the gold is copper. I think no one ever cleans the shafts before installing a new impeller. Once its on they never think about 5 years down the road. I use N/S on just about everything. ws

I broke 2 of those before I cut the impeller out and sent the pump to DEPCO.

FWIW jabsco sent me a replacement impeller puller.
 
Yep, That's the same puller Im using.
