  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' CONVERTIBLE (1987 - 1990)
Time to rebuild the helm on my 48 CNV. I cannot get the steering wheel off the shaft. Several days kroil, PB blaster and just leaning on the wheel puller way more than I would like.
Boat is an 1989....any suggestions? TIA

Stainless on stainless can be a bear , the only thing I could suggest is heat and a bigger puller .

Add some heat to the situation?

Where is your boat / wheel issue??

Tried some heat....will try some more, also hydraulic wheel puller. Thx.

Do you know if it’s a straight shaft or tapered?

Well here is the up date. More Kroil, even tried some stuff called "Mouse Milk" that the Aero guys swear by.
Heated it until the fiberglass on the helm deck started to smoke. 5 Ton Pneumatic wheel puller eventually broke the welds on the wheel.
At that point the 4" cut off wheel came out. Two cuts on the outside of the collar and it finally came off.
What a dog fight.......and BTW if anyone has a steering wheel (perhaps off a second station or ??) that they're willing to sell
I'd be interested.

Thank you.

Looks like a straight, non-tapered 1" wheel mount.
With the heat applied, now you really have to re-seal that pump.

Yup. It’s off to Boat Steer for reman. But the problem may be replacing that Steering wheel
Can’t seem to find any 1” shaft bores, much less an 18” Diameter. I’ll check Sam’s….

I have a wheel but we are on the wrong coast. Try Craigslist I see them all the time. That’s where I found the wood wheel.

It took me a while to find a cost reduced wheel. Then one day it was on e-bay for a deal. Bought it rite up.
While your pump is in the shop start shopping the used out lets also.

I just sent you a PM

Sorry guys back in town. Sam's had one. Fit right on but it wasn't as "deep" as the original one, but we got squared away collar.
Thank you all for your thoughts.
