Can you help me identify the structure?

I discovered this rusted gadget/structure in the SB engine room ventilation opening? The round ball moves the lever that you see. I did not move it much but it definitely moves side to side . I am embarrassed to say.. I have no idea?. There is a hose/wire that used to connect to it from the engine room. But it has been cut with caulk and paint over it. Can you help me identify, please. It does not look in good shape.

Looks like an old drum switch typically used on machinery as a forward/ reverse switch. The center position being the “off” position.

Maybe it's a control for a decommissioned cable master of some kind. A DIY project.
