  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I picked up a new starter and alternator, for a spare parts the other day. They are for a DD 8V71. Both units are 12 volt. Question is, can the starter and alternator be converted to 32 volt and would cost of change over be more then they are worth?

Thanks,

You would likely use the units you have a s cores, and buy rebuilts in 32 v. Most rebuilders will not have an issue with different voltage.

These engines were produced over so many years there may be variations. My luck would be to pay to rebuild and change a spare starter over to 32 volts, keep it around for years and then learn it doesn't fit when I finally need it. The alternator is probably more universal, but why not just rebuild the OEM units if/when needed?

I think the best practice when buying spares is to put the new one on and keep the old working one as a spare. That way you know they both work, the new one will last longer and you are not making the change under duress. Also, you have now learned how to do it, so if you do have to make an emergency switch out, it should go smoother.

Not cost effective to change.
