  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1977 - 1980)
Well, I hope this is my turn to add some value to this forum. I have certainly gained extensive knowledge and solutions to my issues from you all. THANKS!

I have a 79 58’ MY, galley up. It originally came with the “Goofy” modulated AC system for the 4 staterooms. The original owner changed that and installed individual ACs. It has six compressors in all.

About 3 years ago I had 3 of my 6 CruiseAir units not producing cool air. I had an A/C tech come out and proceed to charge me several hundred dollars to recharge 3 of the units with R22 freon. Several months later they were not cooling.

So I went to work. I did a lot of research and here is what I discovered. (Note, I have not shared this with the forum until I determined this was a sound dependable solution. I feel, given the time tested, it is.)

My search found a company called Enviro-Safe Refrigerants www.es-refrigerants.com and a new refrigerant R22a that replaces the R22 and is fully compatible with the R22. I won’t go into the dynamic of the R22 becoming impossible to find, expensive and requiring certification…you can read all this on their web site.

I proceeded to purchase the gauges/hose sets, the sealant, oil and the R22a refrigerant in a 30# tank. I have the installation and charging documents from Cruisair and in fact a “slide rule” styled scale that assists in setting the proper hi/low pressures based on the seawater and ambient temperatures. The results have been excellent. I have gone through multiple seasons with no issues. I am seeing a 17-22 degree differential between intake and delivery air at each unit. My large salon A/C actually “smoothed out” an operating noise level after servicing with the products. The ”leak stop” worked well on 2 units. I did have to top off the salon unit (it was cool, but not cold) with Freon last month, but that took 10 minutes and probably cost me all of $4 worth of R22a Freon. BTW, the culprit was a slow leak at the schraeder valve and cover. I highly recommend you take a look at this as an option for your A/C maintenance.

I looked at it and even had a friend who used it but found it to be less efficient than r22.

by the way the valve is my first thing to check for a leak and I have a tool to change them out without releasing the charge.

Just had to replace the valve on one of my units. How does this tool work? Cost me $300 to replace the R22 and just $60 for the valve.

Its hard to argue the efficiencies required to deliver a temperature differential of 20 degrees from a 34 year old compressor. Granted, I keep the seawater lines acid flushed and clean the vent coils and filters on a regular basis.

The bottomline is that r22 is getting harder and more expensive to get. The r22a is easy to access and inexpensive, relatively speaking. Plus, it breaks yet another shackle of dependency on expensive technical services. In my experience, it works.

It screws on the valve housing and removes the schrader valve guts.
