  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
get to the power cable that feeds the dome light outside the lower helm door on a 1975, 53 MY ???
The light stopped working, so after removal of the dome light, found that the overhead wires are just too short to make any type of connection....yes, I have tried pulling the cable down, but she is stretched to it's limit.......so, before I tear the breaker panel or ???? apart thought I'd ask......
thanks in advance....ed

I just did a core repair and if your boat is like our 71 53 then the wires are glassed into the core and no chance of any extra wire or pulling new wire. same goes for the aft deck overhead light

Thanks, I was afraid of that....

i have seen where people run a small diameter plastic pipe from the cabin side to the light. make the connection under the headliner and run new wire out to the light thru the pipe. glue the pipe to the side deck ceiling.

Thanks, simple project NOT......ed

Replace with battery powered LED?

I assume from your description that there is not enough original wire to attach a crimp connector to it and then adding however much additional wire you need to make the connection?

Is there enough wire to solder an additional piece of wire to the existing one and shrink wrap the connection? You would only need maybe 1/4" of bare wire to do the solder connection.

Thanks Mike, not enough....tried it once, but did not last, now the hot lead is just a "tad' short.....

my options are
1. try cutting the opening up enough to grab the hot lead, and patch the hole,
2. install a solar powered light....saw one at LOWES, may not be the best way, but, may try that.....

I don't see how you can hurt it by digging out around it and getting to the wire. The hole you make will be covered by the light and you can always just caulk around the entire fixture if you're worried about leaks.

Cut it open enough to get enough wire to extend and get a larger diameter fixture to cover the whole. if it works out well get enough to do the other lights so they match.

Thanks all; will try to open the hole and get enough wire to make a connection....want to keep the

old gal as original as possible......
