  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Before using KSA marine insurance of Charleston,SC I suggest a PM to me for details of my "experience" with them.

And Kudos to Mike Carbone of seaworthy who is an absolute professional!

We are sorry for your experience. KSA works with reputable marine carriers which have compliance requirements for older vessels. If these requirements and conditions are not complied with, KSA is not legally authorized to offer a policy from the carrier. KSA takes pride in working with the insured to obtain all necessary info for approval on all policies and coverage. Again, we are sorry for your personal experience.

Rw, sounds like shedding light on these kind of insurance practices brings the proverbial sorry for your experience response. Just use someone other than this company.

Gus,

All I can tell you is that I was satisfied and my problem was solved with one phone call to another company. NO other action was required.

I'm sure there's way more to this story. I really dislike it when the excuse is "not our fault" it's the other guy. There did seem to be a hint of "blame the customer" in there but lacking the details, it's tough to know for sure.

This is for sure: the internet is powerful, and bad news travels way faster than good news.

Eric,

You are correct Sir. There is a lot more to the story and I am not going to air it here. If you care to know the details I suggest you call me tomorrow after 1400 @ 706-993-1056 and I will share my experience directly. I am in Afghanistan so there is an 8 1/2 hour time difference and I work until about 1330 eastern.

What I can tell you here is that the product represented was not the product delivered. And after careful thought I felt it prudent to let my fellow owners know. I am not one to trash anyone but my experience was not what a boat owner should have to deal with. Call me if you want the Paul Harvey version.

Gus, Eric, and others interested,

Please feel free to call me for details of my experience with this situation as a one sided is just that. I am available anytime for my insured’s or any insurance matters...910.352.8033. I spared details as I know most aren’t interested. However, the fact is the vessel condition was not up to par, it needed X repairs to meet requirements for full coverage. Insured chose liability coverage with these known requirements. Invoices nor a re-attend survey showing X were provided after several months in the boatyard. Therefore, my agency nor the carrier can authorize full coverage.

I am not passing blame or fault but its just how it works. Surely, you can call any company off the commercials and get a policy without questions. We work only with A-rated marine carriers which is best for our insureds. We have countless Hatteras's and old project boats which comply and are insured with no issues.

Respectfully.

Gee.......... An insurance company and agent that says "that's just how it works". I am not airing the garbage on here for a reason and I suggest Mr. Rudisill that you do the same.

Point: Boat went 100 miles with no issues after the survey (actually a very nice trip). Some of the time running at 18KTS.

New insurance company gave more hull coverage than I asked for originally, more liability and no restrictions on Florida where she sits without doing anything except applying using the SAME survey.

I have posted on here many times that "Slow an' Easy" was way behind on maintenance and asked many questions on how to deal with some of those things. She was and is not a project or a derelict by any standard. When she leaves the yard she will be ready to go anywhere! And for the record nothing has been done to her for insurance purposes!! It's all stuff we wanted done!

No one in the marine insurance business that I have asked has yet been able to tell me how it's no problem to insure for 300K personal and 850K fuel and environmental liability yet they can't insure the hull for 41K. Seems backwards to me. Way backwards. Especially when the survey says she's worth 59K.

This is my last post on this topic. Please ask your self when you go to buy boat insurance do you want a company or agent that tell's you "that's just how it works"?

Last I checked we are the customers.

Instead of this back and forth, just post the details for all to see.

I can understand both sides of this but without details, it's difficult to judge who is right. It is odd for the ins carrier to agree to give you liability but not hull coverage unless they are offering port risk only until the survey deficiencies are corrected. Getting coverage on these older boats can be tricky and some insurers are better at it than others.

Probably a good idea to pass on this company. Sounds like if you had this much problem with underwriting the boat, a claim would be a nightmare.
