  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
I just discovered the prop shaft on my SidePower thruster has broken at the shear pin on the Port side. Any opinions on whether I will need to haul out or can these be changed in the water? I have already contacted the manufacturer but am curious about what I am facing. In the meantime I am gaining experience docking a single screw in windy conditions. It gets interesting to say the least.

My guess would be you'd have to haul it, but I don't know SP specifically. What did the manufacturer say?

If you go to WWW.imtra.com they have some great diagrams and downloads regarding all the models. After a quick glance, it appears this can be done in the water, but it doesn't look like a quick job for a diver....

I would recommend a haul out. That said, I'd defer to what the manufacturer recommends.

I have a Side Power SP95 that has not been installed yet. I took a look at it at I do not see how you can change the shaft without pulling the boat and removing the motor and drive assembly. Even if you could change the shaft in the water, it would be almost impossible to purge the water and then inject gear lube.

Well, I talked to IMTRA and a new lower unit is on the way. The shafts are not replacable. I get the new 5 blade props so I now will have 13 blades total. Docking will return to the pleasure it was.

Glad to hear you're getting it straight.
Was this a warranty item? Just curious....

does she have to be hauled to change it?

It has to be hauled and it is not warranty. Welcome to Boat Life.......
