  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
I realize there are a lot of variables involved in such a question, but what are you guys paying for bottom painting these days?

The marina where I keep my 58 charges $50 per foot which includes hauling, blocking, and splashing. They charge $12 per foot to haul, block, and splash as well as $75 per day for DIY projects. I wasn't able to find out what kind of paint they use when I drove down to check on the ole' gal yesterday, so it will be hard to get a true feeling for cost until I get this info.

If I let them paint the boat, it will give me the chance to service the through hulls, among other things, and give her a good buffing while she's on the hard. They won't charge a daily rate for DIY as long as I'm paying them to paint the bottom. I'm going to try to do this in conjunction with having somebody check out my starboard. That way if it needs to be yanked, I can do this all at the same time in order to save a few bucks.

According to the local residents of the marina, these guys tend to be a bit slow with their bottom painting, so in this case, slow is good. Really slow is even better. Seems to me that I could come out pretty good letting them paint the bottom if I can get these other issues addressed while she's out. If they took two weeks to do the job, my net cost on the bottom job would be $1,124.00 compared to just the cost for hauling and yard fees. Seems like a no-brainer to me, but am I missing something here?

Sounds reasonable. I usually pay about $800 for a new coat of VC17 plus haulout.

Have them put you on the hard for the season (6 months) The sub is about 1400 for the winter which includes blocking with 16 jackstands, washing, and launching. Electric and water is included. Have them set you where you can get that 10 ton P&H in there and yank that anchor youve got nestled in that engine room.
Hire some homless guys for $ 200 to sand and paint the bottom. Have a nice day Forrest!! ;-))
Get a can of Go-Joe and ferget the road trips! ws

So what do they charge to haul your boat?

I would have expected you to be paying much more than $800 for your 53. How much of that $800 is paint and materials?

I would LOVE for them to put me on the hard, but it's a small yard and they don't have room. Maybe if I time this thing right, I can talk them into giving me more time. The temperatures along about October/November aren't exactly ideal for bottom painting if you know what I mean. Then again, they'd probably throw on the paint anyway just to get me out of their yard.

The biggest reason I've kept the boat that far away from home is the fact they have a travel lift that will handle it. As for setting me where I have access for a crane, that would be the whole idea. The two week window would be pretty tight for an R&R, but not if I have everything and everybody lined up in advance.

Unless it proves to be a simple fix, I'm thinking I'd be money ahead to go ahead and yank the starboard and take it to a diesel truck shop. Hell, my BIL has a huge warehouse in Missssisssiiipppi and builds railroads. He could build this thing for me if all else fails. I might even yank the port while I'm at it and have it gone through as well. It sure would make it easier to get the ER spiffed up as well as re-painting the engines. As for picking up some cheap labor to sand and paint the bottom, there's a dandy Mexican restaurant down the street, and I hear taco sales are pretty slow these days.

Now all I need is to come up with someone who has the necessary experience to cut the top out of my salon without screwing it up. Got any suggestions?

That I can do but I need you to take the disco mirror ball and the ceiling tiles down first.

Seriously the pop of the top is not that big a deal. Getting back in place is the hard part. Plan on making a jig for the supports so I goes back where it belongs.

FYI JR down the dock is looking for work. Call me maybe he can help you out.

I have it done over the winter so the haulout, pressure wash, blocking, and relaunch are all part of the winter storage contract.

The materials and labor are about 50/50 as far as cost. Prep work is minimal since I have always used VC.

Hauling our 53MY, painting the bottom, and putting it back in the water is around 2k at our marina. That's doing it as a single job, not in conjunction with a winter haulout or other maint.

I pay 3000.00 for my 46. That includes sanding the entire bottom, sandblasting the running gear, priming the metal with an etching primer than a barrier coat then 2 coats of vivid on the gear. 2 1/2 coats of Micron 66 on the bottom. haul, pressure wash and launch.

At Huckins Boat Yard.... which is 500' from me.... They charge $29 pr foot to haul out, pressure wash, block, put ONE COAT of bottom paint and then relaunch.........heavy sanding is extra.....
Additional coats are $15 per foot....
I sanded/painted the bottom of our boat in 2004 at a DIY yard and will NEVER do it again... Will hire a few mexicans or cubans to do the sanding work while I sit in a chair and drink beer....
I will do the painting probably though

I would have never expected to see so much variation in pricing, but it sounds like the $50 per foot quote is on the higher end of the scale. Then again, if I can save the storage charges while doing this other work, it will work out to be on the lower end of the scale. It's been a long time since I've kept a boat long enough to worry about having to repaint the bottom. Luckily I'm in freshwater, so it's a lot easier. The bottom paint on the 41 is nearing it's end, so maybe I can work out a package deal with these guys and save a buck or two there as well. And Charlie, there's no way I'd go the DIY route on this one. I'll play the role of supervisor, but that's it.

The bottom paint on the 58 is really holding up quite well having been done about 4 years ago, but it would be foolish not to paint it if I haul it for the engine repair. No doubt there is a pretty good amount of paint missing from the keel (as some may recall

), but other than that, it looks pretty good. I should have had the boat hauled and repainted at State Farm's expense when that happened, but unlike them in the end, I was being a good neighbor.

hey charlie, are you at lambs? i bought my first "big" boat from lambs. it was a 38 ft pacemaker called "kay-mac", feb. 1992, it was on the outside pier, bigbill

I don't paint mine. I'd miss the fresh oysters that grow on it if I painted it.

Hey Sparky,
How are those bottom paint jobs coming along?

We are going to re-do our 36 Hat next week. The only DIY yard in Miami charges us $600 for hauling, preassure wash, blocking, and re-launching. We must buy the bottom paint from them also. Our Petit Trinidad Pro is $230, and I need 2 gallons. About another $150 for sandpaper, rollers, and zincs gets the job done. It takes my son and I two miserable days to do the bottom, clean the running gear and wheel polish the hull with 3M Finesse it II. Tough job though and I am getting too old for this crap.:)

Why don't you check grove harbor? They re pretty reasonable... I don't remember the paint price but they charged me $5 a ft for a short haul in December (70'). Bottom paint is such a major pin it s not worth diy if you can find a good price

plus they re right there so no hassle going up the river

Hey Sparky,

And the REASON your asking this?????

Looks like there are still Two Shi* stirrers left.

We were just wondering if you had made any improvements to your boat(s). Thats what we discuss on this forum Randy...Sparky1...Freebird.

I'm always more than happy to talk about my boats, but that's not what Sky's post was about. With that, I'll just smile and reserve comment. I've mellowed with the extra "e", and Sparky has retired. :)

Sky replied to the original question (nr 2 post in the thread), it's not unusual got someone who replies to follow up and ask how it turned out
