Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
My boat is in the beginning stages of a complete paint job, but my question is pertaining to the bottom. What would be the lastest, newest and best bottom paint and process.

I think it depends on where you keep the boat and how much you use it. There seems to be quite a bit of difference in opinion when it comes to paints and some of it is due to differing local conditions and usage, I believe. So..... where is the boat and how much does it just sit?

I boat in New England and put on about 300 hours a season.

300 hours per season? Wow. You probably don't even need bottom paint for anti-fouling purposes. She doesn't sit still long enough for any marine growth to get a strong hold.

On my boat that gets run a pitiful 50-60 hours per season, I use and have used successfully for many years- Trinidad. It seems to hold up well, inhibits growth, and still looks good at the waterline after a year. I do haul and paint every season, and I boat on the Chesapeake. Here, the water gets quite warm in summer and slime and grass grow quickly.

Read my post on VC-17. This stuff is as thin as water and does not build up. The teflon removes growth when you go fast. Not good for a boat that sits alot. Best applied after a complete removal and barrier coat job. That will be the last time you ever have to sand or scrape the bottom. One new coat per year and you are good to go. If you preassure wash the bottom, just run a scotch brite pad to scratch it up, tape waterline, and paint. We just pulled "Unity" after a full year; 6 months in fresh water, and 6 months in Miami. Almost didn't need preassure washing. The whole job took 2 of us 5 hours. :)

Back in 2003 I stripped the bottom of my 1986 33 Bert. I applied 3 coats of Micron CSC (1 red, followed by 2 blue). Every year I re-apply around the water-line and where ever the red starts poking through.

No build up at all. The bottom is as smooth and clean looking as when I stripped it. I'll never use anything else and I'll never sand the bottom of this boat again.

FYI:

I am also in the NE (Boston).

I've used Petit Optima SR for 4 seasons and have been quite pleased with it's performance. It has, however, gotten to be pretty expensive. I think you can still find it on sale for around $190 a gallon. In a recent Powerboat Reports I saw that Petit Hydrocoat got the same results for less money.

I just put two coats of Ameron ABC3 Blue on mine. It's the paint for commercial users, and it went on easy right over the old stuff. It's supposed to last 5 YEARS at 10 mil (2 coat) thickness. We'll seeeeeeeeeeeee.
$135 gal.

There was a long thread on this about 1 month (2?) ago.

That's what we are going to put on Boss lady: Ameron.

How many have heard about mixing cayenne pepper in the paint ?

I know guys who swear by the pepper. I'm not sure though. I have trinidad and would like to switch to ameron. Is it compatible or do I need to strip the old paint?

West Marine has a $40.00 rebate per gallon on Petit Ultima SR, bringing the price down to $180 / gallon. Good stuff...not inexpensive but good stuff.

Does the cayenne help retard build up do you know someone that has done this it makes sense as it retarding living growth

I've heard about cayenne . Also heard alot about using different antibiotics, mainly tetracyclines in the bottom paint. Supposedly retards growth on the bottom.................................Pat
