  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Anyone have the latest Practical Sailor testing of bottom paints. Saraswati is getting hauled next weekend for bottom paint & zincs and I would love to know the results of the latest Practical Sailor tests...

The plan is...1 coat hard red, followed by 2 caots of abaltive black...then when erd shows through, I know its time for fresh paint. :)

Also, how many gallons per coat on a 53MY? Or hopefully how many coats per gallon?

I would not mix types. My boat has Micron 66 from the PO ( the only thing he did right) and although I need to haul and repaint soon as the barnacles are starting to adhere it has been almost 5 years. It has ablative red under black and the red is starting to show.

Make sure the paints you use are compatible. I know Micron 66 will not go over most paints. There are other versions of it that can but no over hard.

Ok, thanks, then the first coat will be red ablative. Any idea how many gallons per coat? Anyone have any expericne with Interlux ACT with Irgarol? Seems like a good mid-range ablative and I can get a SMOKIN deal on it.

I thought ablative can be painted over hard (in good condition) but not the other way around. Might want to call customer service for compatibility.

Agree that red first coat and ablative top coat is a smart way to go.

Under $100/gal?

I can get the first 3 gallons of black at $85 per gallon though the previous owner, but would need to get additional at around $140 from Boater's World unles someone has a better source.

$105 wholesale here in FL BUT shipping is a problem. Is there a wholesale marine supply house in the area?

I have used the ACT with Ingarol here on long island. I have to say it seemed to work pretty well. It has a slime blocker, Ingarol that appears to work pretty well. left the boat in the water 2 seasons at the end of second season dove the boat after a trip and checked the bottom, spotless....I now have a boat with Micron. don't think it has the slime blocker and the waterline is always a mess. Perhaps the growth/algae has been rougher this year...but I'm not impressed.

A while back there were some forum members who had used a bottom paint called Ameron which was supposed to last up to 5 years. For those who have used it, how long has it been on your boat and how is it holding up?
Thanks.
Mike Ford

I have three years in water with the Ameron ABC123 "marine coating" still no barnacles or growth on painted surfaces. Props do need occassional cleaning. 58YF in salt water. This was what the U.S. Navy used on Submarines as of 5 years ago. They are now using a more "green" mixture that doesn't work as well. Made in LA and used on Oil rigs to prevent marine growth..
