  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
56' MOTOR YACHT (1981 - 1984)
Getting ready to head down the Tenn-Tom to Mobile Bay and then the Keys and was thinking about hauling somewhere in-between to have the bottom paint renewed (it has ablative now and being in fresh water for the past 5 years is in pretty good shape). The bottom was blister repaired, pealed, epoxy coated and painted 5 years ago, thru-holes serviced, new hydraulic lines for the trim tabs, zincs, etc.

I have a quote from Harbortown in Vonore, TN (thank you dottie's husband for the referral). Their quote not including zincs or any other work other than haul, wet sand, 2 coats of Interlux ACT was $5,612 plus whatever else they can talk me into. They were not interested in doing any electrical work, inspecting and fixing if need be the thru hulls, or looking at the generator. I sort of want it all done at the same time.

It weighs in at 40 Ton - 18'2" beam.

Need to find a marine electrician as well to tune up the NL 20KW generator. It is not putting out 60hz, but 55 instead. Looking for recommendations. Also found some wires that look like they overheated (discolored and brittle insulation). I also found some romex used by the PO instead of multi strand which is a 'no-no", so want someone to inspect the wiring and make sure we don't have an issue in waiting.

I know a lot of you guys do your own electrical work, but I am pretty shaky on that stuff.

thx

55hz is really low but that should be an easy speed adjustment on the governor. Freq is directly linked to RPM so 55hz means it’s running at about 1650 rpm instead of 1800

For the rest of the electrical work you d be better off finding a marine electrician which can do the work at your dock instead of in a yard. Will Be much cheaper. Electrical work can add up very quickly

I agree regards the electrician, but have had no luck. The ones I have run down, either don't return phone calls or have retired from the industry. Does anyone know of any in the Chattanooga area where the boat currently resides? Barring that I am headed down the Tenn Tom / Mobile / Keys around January and barring unforeseen shortages that are out of our control (25 days of diesel supply left in country as of today) could do it enroute.

I did reach out to Mad Dog in Mobile and I'll keep everyone in the loop as to their response.

As always, thanks in advance for the info.

Does $5,600 sound reasonable for a haul, sand, and ablative repaint?

I had my 52C done in Nashville a few weeks ago, but I have no idea what it cost. They are too busy to send me the bill. :) There are several good choices going South from my extensive research.

Who else would u recommend I look into?

Lee Spry in Ikua MS, Safe Harbor Aqua Yacht, and Dog River in Mobile. Spry if you can get on his schedule and you're going by there.

It seems a bit high to me but not crazy high. i checked the current rates for the yard I used for my repower 4 years ago here in Miami and they charge about $1600 for haul out, pressure wash, block and launch. Figure 5 gallons of paint for 2 coats… $1000 plus two days of labor max.

I need to do my 53 in the couple of months and I m waiting for an estimate from another yard where we just did the 116 I run. We hauled out on Tuesday afternoon, they started Wednesday morning and had the bottom done by Thursday afternoon. I was really impressed. Altogether we were in and out in 4 days.

For some reason many yards just let things drag on and on.
