  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' LRC (1976 - 1981)
I am new to east coast trawling. We have a 48 Hat LRC and getting ready to bottom paint. My experience has been west coast and mexico sailing and have had good success with blue water marine 67% SCX ablative paint. I know the differences between hard and ablative, but was wondering what some of your experiences have been between the two and number of seasons, etc. Our cruising area is NYC to GA and as you know we go at a blistering 7kts. I am leaning toward ablative, two coats and third on the waterline but would like to hear confirmation or why hard may be better. Thanks

Stuart

That's exactly what I do. Got 4 years on my last bottom job with Micron CSC. Just repainted with Bluewater Ablative. We're not speedsters either.

Same here csc three years up north trip to Florida a little scrubing once in a while. Slow boat as well. Just repainted it for the trip south. Bill

Go with the Micron 66. better growth protection and seems to last a little longer.

Either Bluewater or Micron will do well. There are some bottom paint tests in the last issue of Practical Sailor (I realize we aren't sailboats but at this point they are the only game in town on bottom paint test, at least the only objective game)

The new eco paints don't hold up very well. A good copper ablative ought to see you well, especially if you are doing a lot of cruising.

Micron CSC has been on my boat since 2000.... Went from 2004 till 2011 before repainting the bottom, and then it was still in great shape (I use a diver and he would always say the bottom didn't need painting..and he was right)... I DID put 6 coats on in 2004......

I use Micron Extra (I'm in freshwater). No barnacles in the Great Lakes, but we do get slime / fur at the water line. I put 3 coats on in 2008, and do a "boat show special" - water line and bow only every season. no issues and looks great. I'd never use anything but an ablative, but will also look into the "super slick" bottom coats at next full bottom peel.

I switched to Seahawk Cukote about 3 years ago and have been quite happy with it here in North Carolina and the Chesapeake. The key is to keep moving! We have been relatively stationary the last two years in a spot where the growth is intense and the Cukote has held up very well. the more coats the better I suppose, but the bottom sanded extensively three years ago, I had 3 coats applied, and since "we had it out`anyway" this May had them throw another coat on there, two at the water line kind for the heck of it because the yard was running a sale. Probably could have gone another two years easy.

I have been using one coat of Pettit Trinidad Pro at three year intervals. We cruise close to 3000 miles each year but the boat also sits for weeks at a time. At the end of three years there will be barnacle growth for the divers to remove.

Anybody using Sea Hawk? Marinas here are pushing it.

Bobk

Micron csc is one of the better anti-foulings on the market.

Currently, I'm a Micron Extra fan - great success with that over the past 5 years, but a few buddies of mine have had great success with Sea Hawk as well (this is also OEM for a few builders). For fresh water, I also see great results with VC-17 (but not for salt use).

Bob, see the post right above yours!

We have used bluewater ablative 67 for the last few bottom jobs. Very happy with results. Paint job every 30 -36 months. Two coats first time (plus an extra on the waterline) - after that one coat and 2 on waterline. No fouling except on a few metal parts (trim tabs, rudders and running gear). We are in a bad area for fouling (lower P)otomac river) and have found that barnical buster sprayed on the props/shafts slows them down for about a year and after that 2 -3 dives a year are enough. Moving the boat at least once a week results in staying very clean. Just passing on our experience. Used Micron before the Bluewater, and see no drop off for the lower cost - purchase on line.

Regards, Bob K

We use Petit Trinidad Pro in the warm waters of Miami. Our boat sits all summer but we have a diver monthly. We re-do
it every 3 years. In the Great Lakes we had good service and no buildup with VC-17. The Miami barnacles loved it.

Stuart, saw your boat pull in the Morehead City the other day. Looks good! We are on the Hatt motor yacht next to that Defever trawler you were chatting up. Out at Cape Lookout now.
