  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1984 - 1992)
Has anyome had a bottom job and inspection completed recently in Ft. Lauderdale? We're about to schedule ours and are probabley going to have it done at Cable Marine.

They always seem to be fair and do a good job but I figured I'd double check and see if anyone just got a great deal somewhere from a yard trying to build up some business. Looking to do it middle drop it off middle of next week.

Thanks

Tony

Give Roscioli a call. Ask for Manny.

Some years ago I had a haulout and some work done at Cable Marine and I was very satisfied with the quality of the work and even the price...

Cable peeled my bottom three years ago and did a great job.

Hey Jim, is peeling your bottom a new medical procedure?

Walt

Doesn't every trip to the yard leave you feeling like you've had your bottom peeled? :p

How does this estimate look to everyone. This is on top of the bottom also being painted.

1. Remove and reinstall rudders. Labor and materials... $800.00

2. Replace lower bearings. Labor and materials.. .$850.00

3. Replace upper bearings and collars. Labor and materials.. .$ 1,150.00

4. Replace packing. Labor and materials... $475.00

5. Replace worn tillar rod ends. Labor and materials.. .$400.00

6. Replace all six (6) cutlass bearings. Labor and materials... $2,850.00

7. Furnish and install new port and starboard P.S.S. shaft seal assemblies.

Labor and materials.. .$3,435.00

8. Replace port main engine seacock, hose and clamps. Labor and materials... $1 ,990.00

We're definately doing all 6 Cutlass Bearings, the rudder work and the Sea Strainer, "Safety Issue". Just wondering everyones views on the price. As far as the Shaft Seals he said over all they look ok we just noticed a little salt deposits around I believe the Bellow so he said that can wait. I told him it's always dry there and I've never even noticed a drip, even under way. He said overall they look good so that maybe somethiing to wait on.

Thanks

Tony

Without seeing the boat myself I'd say no. More is better. There's no way to armchair this. No matter what anyone thinks. Until you start to tear it apart you don't know what to expect. The estimate is based on what? Did they see the boat? Is it on the hard? Have they started to disassemble it?

Who knows what you may find when you pull the shafts. Are you having them trued?

It doesn't seem bad but obviously hard to tell as it depends on access, etc..

For bottom paint, every two years, we pay $38 a foot to haul, block, pressure wash, paint and launch, at Grove Harbor Marina here in the grove (Miami) As good as been able to find in SoFL

It looks depressing to me. Maybe a cheap skate like me shouldnt even own a large boat. In NC the prices are way cheaper. I had the NC yard repack the two rudders and shafts for $150. Not too bad I thought. I just dont get it. These yards and people who work on yachts (in florida especially) are used to people not even caring about the charges. They have an open or blank check book. One things for sure, the final bill will be more than the estimate. Sad to say. Good luck.

I am Unpleasently surprised. Seems very high to me. I agree with Pate. Why don't you just run the boat up to Scott in Port Canaveral..... He just did some work for Bobk and Bob was very satisfied with the quality of the work and the cost. The additional cost of the fuel probably won't be much of a factor especially since you will be taking a nice cruise for a couple of days and Scott is very experienced with Hatteras. Besides he's a frequent forum contributor......

I just had 2 cutless bearings changed on one shaft and it cost $1559.00 here at Kent Narrows MD.

Cutlass bearings can bring surprises. If your already pulling the shafts for the logs do the whole drive train from checking the shafts for wear and true to balancing the props. The drip less with new seals, hoses and clamps. Add in a week for drying any blisters that may need repair.

The boats on the hard already. I knew the rudders would be do and assumed the shaft bearings soon as well. I was just wondering about pricing if it seemed reasonable. The new seacock seems high, but not sure. Lastly, I like the breakdown of cost to remove and replace rudders. You think that would just be part of it. Anyway. Any information all of you provide is appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

Wow thats pretty much top dollar instead of new strainer I would install new thur hull and valve and install new Southbay strainer on hull and do away with inside strainer.South bay strainer is about $275.00 .

I didn't think the estimate was that bad, the price of parts, especially metal ones, have become insane.

Seems high to me, but maybe SF prices are like that. Nothing on a boat is cheap, but those seem a bit astonishing.

Price for most of it seems very high. I've done most if not all of that on my 46C which I would expect to be very similar to doing it on your 45C. Rudders are a breeze to remove and install. The bearings can be a bit tough to get out but they can easily be cut out if needed. Not sure why the price is so high for doing the top bearings and collars as I think that is the easier part of the job. The cost to replace the seacock seems way too high providing you have reasonable access. If you have the room to swing a decent sized pipe wrench they usually come out pretty easily. I changed out 9 of them in a weekend with the help of a friend. Cutlass bearings are a big unknown. As Scott said, it all depends on how everything comes apart and the condition of all the parts involved. In the past I've dropped the struts and had everything re-bedded and all new fasteners used. A bit of overkill but you'll know everything was gone through when you're done.

Update: I'm in Pittsburgh, boats in FL so this is info is from the yard, and the guy that takes care of our boat. He's been periodically checking in on them.

It took them few hours to drop the one Rudder because it was "Stuck", the other came right out.

The bottom prep and paint work is going very smooth and looks good. The Valve/Seacock being replaced on the port main engine strainer as of noon hadn't been started.

That being said, I was told that approx quote $1,990.00 includes about $700 worth of Parts, "valve, Hose, and clamps" and approx $1,200.00 in labor. I will be going through the bill very closely and asking to see time cards if they want me to believe it takes 12 +/- hours to remove a thru Hull valve and put a new one on. It's not exactly the easiest places to get to BUT it's 3 bolts in the Hull, a pipe fitting and some hose from the strainer.

The Cutless Bearings I get, seems fair, and could go either way but that thru hull is bugging me.

Like I mentioned before it's funny how it's all broken down on that rudder work, or am I wrong. $800 to remove and install. $850 and $1,150 to replace bearings. Aren't they kind of the same job, don't you have to do one in order to do the other? Replace the Packing $475, again isn't that kind of, or part of reinstalling the rudders? I get that you have to buy new packing, but not $475 worth. Don't those few things kind of go hand in hand. I've replaced packing before. It was easy, I loosened the nuts on the all thread so I could slide the coller up. I wrapped the packing arond the shaft while gently working it down into place. I then slid the coller back down and gave and tightened up the nuts on the all thread. I don't quite understand the $400+ of labor.

I don't know, maybe I'm wrong I'll just have to see when the final bill is made up and I can check the hours and explinations.

He did state these were "Estimates" (For Budgetary Purposes Only). I just know how that goes, and it's usually higher. Hope I'm wrong, but only time will tell.

Tony

Hey Tony if you got any of that packing left send it to me so I can make my wife some gold jewelry.
