1967 34c, spent weekend pulling old unused wires and re wiring alot of other stuff. found 3 heavy guage wires to bridge, dc +- and at third hooked to engine cradle. using the +- wires but the white wire was not hooked up. this was a wire the size of a pinky finger, very heavy and looked to be original. I cant for the life of me think what would needed to be bonded on the bridge? If it was for lightning then it would be mounted directly to a plate in the hull I would think. That wire got the ax along with alot of others, have a few more to pull out but it is looking good.

Re wired some in the main panel, lower helm and upper helm also completely re wired the 12v light system as hatteras did not use buss bar, they used a wire harness, multi splices. found some errors with prior owner adding stuff etc but for the most part the wireing is all original and in good shape. Anyhow we have been wanting to do this for the last 4yrs and finaly did it. Boat turns 40 next month so she should be in excellent shape for b day party.

Do you have the oem wiring diagrams? They would show whether or not that wire was original. If you don't have them you can get them from Hatt.

Hey Steve doing wiring does that mean the engine room is repainted????
When I got my paper work from Hatteras and I did have the original book there were no schematic's at all!! I do remember when I pulled all mine out I only had 2 #14 feeds for the dc power to the Bridge
I put in 3 runs one from each bank using #4 cable.

On my boat there were extra heavy duty feeds roughed in which were from the factory. You may have found those.

I think the wires are original, just dont know why you would have to bond anything above the waterline, esp the bridge.

Dan I did start on repaint of bilge. Not done as i ran out of paint.

I found that same big white wire on my boat on the bridge. Since I've gone through every drawing and haven't accounted for it I was a bit puzzled. I have not been able to locate the other end. So my latest thought is maybe it's for the SSB going to the grid molded into the flybridge.

Maybe someone else here knows for sure. Anybody?

If you have a half or marlin tower they need to be grounded. They also usually ran a wire for radio ground. Especially as your 34 would have had a DSB AM radio when new that needed a ground.

my guess would be a static/ radio/lightning ground. See if there is any continuity.

Take your right hand and hold the steering wheel. Wet your hand first to make better contact. Put the end of the cable in your mouth and tell me if it tingles. If not try moving your hand to the hot feed and see what happens there.

I believe that large wire is the system ground wire that should go to the through hull ground plate. When thses boats were built that heavy duty ground was for the AM radios in use at the time. Mine had a gray covering and it did show on the system grounding diagram. Bob

Scott now thats not nice are you still upset about the Breaker mistake

No thats what caused the breaker mistake. I told Steve to check the 50A shore cord that way and I think he lost his memory from the zap.
