Hello all,

I have a large Bomar port light at the rear of my 1983 Hatteras 48 MY over the head end of the master birth. It is about 15X24”. It opens in and up after loosening the two dogs at each side and the two at the bottom. I want to remove the cover to replace the Lexan widow in the metal frame. The hinges have pins that need to be driven through to get the cover off. The pins are rolled steel with hollow cores. It is hard to get a good swing with a hammer on a blunt punch to drive them out and I am worried about cracking the frame. I did go easy and they didn’t move. Since they have been in there for 27 years they don’t want to give up easily. I am thinking of making a "contraption" with a C-clamp, a slightly undersized screw, and a stack of washers on the other end to press them through. Has anyone removed these "beasts" and do you have any better suggestions on doing so with out causing an even worse issue?

Thanks,
Jimbo46

Jim,

First I'd get some penetrating oil inside the pin with the hope of having it get through the slit in the roll pin. Also a short length of iron pipe might be easier to deal with than a stack of washers. Get them both almost out before you pop them free.

I have two of those ports and I removed both. Replaced them with safety glass a few years ago.

I drove the pins out. They did not come out easily, but they did come out.

I dislocated my elbow in judo Tournament and chipped a bone and had pins to keep it in place. But what I was worried about was the pin removal.

Real funny Djaan, but thanks to BobK and some others, I now have my "tool" kit ready. It includes a C-clamp, a slightly undersized flat head inch and a half bolt, and a 1 inch piece of tubing to push the pin through on the other end. Add some penetrating oil and hopefully I will be OK. Sounds better than beating it into submission to me. Thanks for the encouraging and mostly helpful responses! ;-)
