  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
My '81 43 DC is showing a bit of fade...expecially on transom where exposed to sun while under cover. However, do not think it is bad enough to need painting. (attached pic, but doesn't look as bad in pic as in light of day). Thinking of compounding, polishing and waxing with Shurhold Yachtbrite Buff Magic (compounding) and Pro Polish (Polish/wax). Does anyone have experience with these products? Have heard mixed reviews (as in it only lasts one season). I was also told that you can only compound gelcoat. Not advisable to compound paint. True? Thoughts?

Question: Does anyone know what the original paint was on these boats? I have no idea if it has been repainted as that I am the fourth owner. Have read here where Imron is acrylic paint and okay for compounding and buffing, but Awlgrip is not and can not be buffed unless it is Awlcraft paint.

I use Finess light compound and it brings the shine back to the paint. Yours has a lot more oxidation than mine so you may need to use a heavier grip compound. Please be careful not to over buff because you could at high-speed's go right through the coating.

Also tape the line between the blue and the white no matter which side you are doing. Saves a lot of clean up:cool:

You're right the blue will smear.

for what it may be worth I use a styrofoam pad and use 3m light compound it is very very lite it gets the oxidation and not the paint. MOST OF ALL NO BUFFER MARKS..I use Mothers wax and cleaner also with putting on and off with the buffer. NO fabric pads.
