Do we have an BMW car owners/enthusiasts who can recommend the best on-line sites for BMWs? I need to find a particular BMW manual transmission (I'm not a BMW owner) and there are a LOT of BMW forums out there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (the piece I am looking for is a Getrag manual transmission called a 265, with 1:1 top gear, sometimes called a "dog leg" box, which came in several 80s BMWs)

I know more than I ever wanted to know about owning and racing Porsches, but have had only one BMW (it was a fine car btw).
I would look into the BMW Club (of America?) website, you should find what you need there.

Go to : Car-Part.com. Enter the year and model and it will give you a choice of what part to look for. this will open up pages and pages of parts across the country or by region. Shipping is free. Car-Part.com is an affilliation of wrecking yards.Good luck

Thanks! I think I can figure out which year BMW it came in from some posts on the SL forum. I think this particular transmission was used in a lot of BMWs. (Getrag 265)

Call your local Jasper dealer. They rebuild transmissions too. Probably have one ready for your project.

Damn, I never thought of that. That's genius. They might have one on the shelf, already done. Thanks!

These are hard core Bimmer guys. I have bought used parts without drama at very low prices from members.

For on-line sales I've had luck with Autohaus in Arizona and Pelican Parts in LA. Googel will help you find both.

I can't post links. Too few posts

thanks, though, it's helpful.

Hey Jim, I'm having drive-ability issues with the transmission in my 2005 Mercedes ML350. Perhaps you can get working on that for me? In your spare time of course....

I can suggest someone to look at it.......best transmission guy I know, if he can get it in. Mind you, my 500E is already up there.......

anyway, there's nothing wrong with the transmission in the 280SL. I just want a transmission for it that makes it fun to drive. A close-ratio five-speed beats a wide-ratio four-speed any way, especially a four-speed with a crap linkage.

Thanks for that. I just found a set of factory alloy wheels for the Jetta at a very reasonable price. Those and a set of Bilsteins will be my Christmas present to me this year.

Holy Cow, and all this time I thought this was a boating forum. LOL

German cars fit into the boat forum pretty well. The maxim of German car makers has always been, "How can we use 100 parts to accomplish the same task that 5 parts can do?" :)

They are left over from the old refer days when the guys were peddling the stuff in the capital city. The law cracked down and the cars stoped rolling along with the money. Those guys are in the coochoose and mama is standing guard over the wheels. Use to be moon shine and 55 chevy belairs. Tim

Too funny tIM! but probably true. I had a BMW before I knew better, it spent more time in the shop than in my garage. I finally filed suit and won, money returned to me including legal fees. The dealer wound up paying BMW could have cared less. I nick named the car Bavarian Mechanics Whore.

In Jamaica which is 95% African decent, every pimp in town drives a BMW.
